In July 1979 the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation inaugurated the Museum of Contemporary Art in Hora, capital of Andros and birthplace of Basil P. Goulandris. In the two wings of the Museum a part of the Foundation’s collection is exhibited throughout most of the year. Each summer, since 1986, the Foundation has been organising temporary exhibitions of distinguished 20th-century artists in the Museum of Contemporary Art on Andros. The Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation has built up a significant art collection of important 20th-century Greek and international artists. This collection comprises the core of the Museum of Contemporary Art on Andros. The increasing attendance of the Athenian public and the inhabitants of Andros led to the Museum’s expansion to a new wing, which was completed in 1986. Moreover, the Foundation has made provisions for the construction, equipment and enrichment of a new Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens.

I really didn't expect such a wonderful collection of paintings and sculptures by two of Greece's famous artists. It really is a little gem and is worth going out of your way to visit. The museum is beautifully located just above the harbour.

A visit to the museum is a must! The quality and quantity of the exhibits is wonderful, especially considering the low fare) and the site itself makes you feel as if you have uncovered a hidden treasure!

Museum is a must seen place while visiting this Greek Aegean island. Every summer presents exhibitions of great artists European and Greek. Picasso, Dali, Toulouse Lautrec and may others were been presented in this modern museum. This summer presents a Greek surrealist Eggonopoulos.

Just amazing! Excellent permanent collection of modern Greek artists. Lucky us to visit also the Engonopoulos exhibition. The most complete of the artist, well exposed and fully documented.

This visit we actually got inside and was not disappointed. Some beautiful pieces by Michael Tombros, which he bequeathed to his native homeland. There's a piece called "Musical Instrument", which you hear on entering and throughout your visit, it's a fascinating piece, featuring magnetic force,...More

When we visited the featured exhibition was the work of George Zongolopoulos, not someone I'd heard of before, but who seems well known for large scale sculptures in public spaces. His smaller works and models of umbrellas on fixed wires viewed through huge magnifying lenses...More
