Good circular walk starts from here - see their web sites PDF. You need GPS though and the track to follow unless you are one of those people who is good at maps and compass.

Parking is outside the gates unless disabled. WC and small visitor centre... dogs must be on leads no wild swimming them and duck chasing etc. Out of season not crowded at all.

I not that nearly every review on here... the reply thanks and says let us note dogs must be on leads... yes it is a wildlife park.

Car parking is free but donations can be put in the donation box in the visitors centre.

Really beautiful. I was staying in the area and did the 8 mile walk that starts from the reserve. I would definitely recommend.

My husband and I and our dog went for a walk round the nature reserve this afternoon (we followed the yellow route from the downloaded map) and it was very muddy and boggy in places. It had not long rained so to a certain extent this was to be expected therefore I would recommend stout footwear. There are some steep climbs in places and some narrow and some wider paths. Nice to hear the watercourse wending its way through the countryside. We parked on the grass verge by the bridge near the reserve entrance. There is a small reserved parking area off road for disabled badge holders. There is a toilet in a log cabin as you enter the site and also an information centre with a visitors book. Nice few hours wandering round in the open air listening to wild bird song and general sounds of the countryside.

Thanks for reviewing our beautiful Knapp and Papermill nature reserve. We're pleased to hear that you enjoyed your walk even though it was a little muddy. It's certainly an interesting and beautiful place with lots of different habitats...and different walking challenges...but, as you say, the sound of the Leigh Brook through the lower part of the reserve is lovely. Our neighbours very kindly allow us to use their field for parking on very busy days...but we have to anticpate these and book them in advance. We hope you don't mind us taking this chance to remind TripAdvisor readers who visit this wonderful place that, for both our wildlife and other visitors, dogs should be kept on a lead at all times. We have a designated picnic area near the start of the walk - perfect for being able to drop off everything back at the car and great for minimal squashing of plants further on :) Thanks everyone!

I'm mystified why this is deemed an "attraction". It's perfectly pleasant, but so are all the local walks in the area. Want to see meadows and flowers? They're all around you. Trees? Umpteen differing woods within a mile. Wildlife? You'd be better off somewhere else where there aren't so many people congregating. By all means visit, but do be aware that a walk from any of the local villages will be at least as rewarding and, better yet, if you buy something at the local pubs or shops, you'll be helping the local economy.

Having seen upwards of 20 children ( on a school field trip ) in wellies stomping around in the stream,, really good for the wildlife.....not!!!.... we decided to let our dog off the lead to cool down in the stream for a short while as it was a really hot day .
We then spotted one of the staff marching up the path shouting at us that our dog was loose,,,not on a lead and that this is a nature reserve you know!!!!
I explained that our very well trained dog was cooling off before being put back on lead.
No...put that dog on a lead!!!!
At no stage did your member of staff introduce herself, explain why it seemed fine to have so many children in the stream but that our dog could potentially ruin the seclusion for wildlife.??
We also noticed on our way back, said school having lunch on a grassed area with your staff and not within the confines of a picnic area set aside by you!! to stop people having picnics elsewhere on the site.
Double standards seem to be at play. As a regular visitor to nature reserves ( with the dog!!! ) this one is on our doorstep but we will not visit again!.

Thank you for taking the time to review The Knapp and Papermill and we’re sorry that you didn’t have a good experience. The Knapp and Papermill is a sensitive nature reserve and our activities there, with schoolchildren and other groups, are limited and managed with any effects on wildlife being monitored. It is important for children to get out and experience nature but in order to minimise any impact on wildlife we limit the number of groups that use The Knapp. We have been running visits for schools at The Knapp for decades – numbers of visits are controlled and all visits are managed carefully by us. Whilst it may not appear that your dog has any impact, this soon mounts up when other visitors allow their dogs (or themselves) into the water. It is for this reason that we ask all visitors to stay out of the Leigh Brook. On those nature reserves where dogs are allowed, we ask everyone to keep their dogs on leads at all times for the benefit both of wildlife and people.

Such a lovely place to come and visit ruined by not having any where to park. People park on the grass verges at the bottom of a steep hill. Blocking majority of the traffic coming through. Especially on a weekend. I feel sorry for the people who live near and have this every day.

Thanks for taking the time to review our beautiful nature reserve. Unfortunately the reserve has become much more popular in recent years and we are unable to provide more parking. A neighbouring landowner very kindly rents their field to us for a set number of days each year and we use these days for bank holidays, events and other ‘high’ days. At all other times, we’re afraid that people have to use the roadside space available and park sensibly to ensure the road is kept clear for other users.

You can walk around this area in about an hour but you can walk outside the woodland on footpaths if you wish to extend the walk. It has wooded areas, a river, meadows, an old brick bridge over the river and undulating terrain. There is a small unmanned visitors centre with loads of info/maps about the site. Its slightly out on a limb, but there is limited parking on an impromptu car park opposite the entrance. Its very charming. There are a couple of pubs within a mile or so of the site!

Thanks for taking the time to review our beautiful Knapp and Papermill nature reserve. We're so pleased that you had a lovely time and just wanted to let everyone know that if they want to extend their walk, a booklet is available that takes in an 8mile route through several other local nature reserves. It's available as a free download from our website - visit the Blackhouse Wood nature reserve page for a link to the booklet and a free audio trail. Alternatively it's available to buy for just £1 from our online shop or in the visitor centre at the Knapp and Papermill. We hope people enjoy it! We hope you don't mind us taking this chance to remind TripAdvisor readers who visit this wonderful nature reserve that, for both our wildlife and other visitors, dogs should be kept on a lead at all times. I really wanted to visit a bluebell wood so we chose to visit The Knapp on the last weekend to see them in flower. Parking on a space at the side of the road, we donned our walking boots along with a little picnic.

Information centre was informative with plenty of leaflets and poster boards of wildlife and flowers in the reserve. A small map of the numbered route was great telling you about the plants, wildlife and history along the way.

Within minutes we were amongst beautiful wild garlic flowers which led to the small river and lookout over the bank walls to try and spot a kingfisher.

Continuing our walk across large open meadows, a pretty bridge and a weir passing many colourful wild flowers throughout and numbered bird boxes dotted about in the trees. Listening to the birds singing, in such a pretty peaceful reserve was wonderful.

There were plenty of benches to sit and relax along the way which led to the Papermill where the bats are. A bench at the top to relax with lovely views. We then continued to the woods where there was some slightly steep climbing along the way which was quite muddy in places in the woods but not much, although a different path could have been taken that led us through orchard trees in blossom and back to the information centre where there is also a toilet.

A brilliant day that I found was good for the mind, very peaceful and beautiful. The whole walk took us 2.5 hours taking a gentle stroll around.

We would definately visit the reserve again. A perfect walk.

Thanks for taking the time to review The Knapp & Papermill; we're really pleased you enjoyed your visit. It's a very special nature reserve at all times of year...if you visit in winter keep a look out for parties of redpolls and long-tailed tits feeding in the alder trees alongside the brook whereas spring is full of wild garlic and bluebells! You may need wellies after lots of rain though ;) Just a quick reminder for all our visitors to this wonderful nature reserve that, for both our wildlife and other visitors, dogs should be kept on a lead at all times - thanks everyone :)
