This is memorial to the ‘Victims of Communism’ in Prague. It was produced by the Czech sculptor Olbram Zoubek. You will find it at the bottom of Petřín hill, just along from the funicular station in the Lesser Town area. It is one of many statues in Prague that deserve a tour all of their very own. The graphic depiction of the statutes descending the stairs is quite haunting. A contrast to the flower beds running along the base of the hill blooming with tulips when we visited. Visit and have a ponder.

This striking monument can be seen on the base of the Petrin Park , just above Ujezd. There are quite a few wide steps, that are part of the design. The bronze strip running up the steps has engraved numbers of the victims of communism.
The numbers are grouped into categories.
The thousands that were prosecuted and jailed , thousands that died in jails and labor camps, thousands that were caught trying to escape, thousands that were forced into exile.
My husband and I are part of the number. Forced into exile in 1969.

That is why, when I am back in Prague, I stop by to remind myself how lucky we were to escape the tyranny and built a new life. Glad, that we can, once again, come back to this park where I used to play as a child.

Those who lived it and survived it , will never forget it ....

This Memorial is dedicated to all the victims of comunism. Not only to those who were jailed or executed but also to those whose lives were ruined by totalitarian despotism.

The bronze sign stands at the base where the statues are, unfortunately it has faded and it is hard to read. Many people miss it, or so it seems.

There is also a narrow bronze strip inlaid in the center of the concrete steps.
The staggering numbers of victims are engraved and repeat at intervals. All the way from the bottom step to the top.

One of those numbers that most resonates with me : 170, 938 people were forced into exile. My husband and I are part of that number...We were the lucky ones.

This used to be my neighborhood, I played in this park as a child.
To see this monument here now when we return home is overwhelming at times.
It can be seen from as far away, as the Legii Bridge.

I never miss coming back...

Very evocative memorial. This memorial is well worth a slightly detour off the main tourist routes, but still located centrally enough to make it easy to reach. Many people do not know enough of the history of this country let alone how peverse and rampant was the victimisation of its citizens under an often brutal communist regime. Beginning with the heroic Czech airmen who under incredibly impossible conditions and tortuous routes zigzagging back and forth across Europe to finally reach England, join the RAF and fly dangerous operations over Nazi occupied Europe to help gain freedom for their coutry, to then find themselves persecuted, jailed or disappeared when the communists took over in 1948 being under extreme suspicion after their years of western influence. Some were lucky enough to escape a second time, many were not. Many citizens were executed by the communists, countless others harassed, persecuted, removed from their jobs, left to sweep sidewalks if not jailed. Neighbours were encouraged to spy or report on their neighbours, at one's job the same for fellow workers, paranoia spread, distrust proliferated. To understand the psyche of its citizens you need to learn the history, that this land in the centre of Europe was occupied throughout history by many unwelcome foreign entities, most recently the communists and the Russians.

The symbolism of the falling apart bronze sculptures of the male bodies is not difficult to figure out. But the numbers make it even more meaningful - they say it all ...
The estimated numbers of the victims are embossed in a thin bronze strip that runs the length of the steps leading to the seven male sculptures.

205,468 people were arrested
170, 938 people were forced into exile
4,500 people died in prison
327 people were shot trying to escape
248 people were executed

When we visited in July there were numerous wreaths placed at the monument.
Forty years of communism had a long lasting and devastating effect on many Czechs and Slovaks and their families. A small nation of very resilient and resourceful people, capable of achieving such an amazing comeback in such a short time since the fall of communism. I used to live just steps away from here and after many years in exile, my husband and I count ourselves fortunate to be able to return and enjoy my beloved Prague again.
This monument obviously has a special meaning to our family. Our lives were forever changed, but looking at the statistics posted here, we were among the lucky ones.

I never miss coming here...
You should not miss it either....

I am from the country that has experienced Communism in the past. We know not only by words what is this and how this ideology could affect your life. Thankfully none of my relatives were not victims, but many of my compatriots were. This is good that Czechs not only remember the history, but also commemorate sad pages of it.
And I do not understand people who make smiley photos with these tragic figures…

I love this memorial to the Victims of Communism, and the way in which the artist chose to demonstrate communism’s effects on the people who lived under Communist rule. A very moving display that really needs no words to convey great emotion.

This memorial certainly makes you think. It is very simply and cleverly made, great detail has been put into the statues, which commemorate the victims of communism.

All peoples should look at this and seen how the soul/humanity can be destroyed by a totalitarian regime. Also this can refer to present times (especially in the USA) where political correctness is doing the same thing by destroying free speech and not allowing opposing points of view.

Is a representation of what you think. For me was how the human body was reborn after all the agony the people pass during that turbulent time. It start with a simple naked foot; while downstairs, he is transforming his body, he is reconstructing from the ashes. In the last step, is the full body, naked, with affliction in his face; too much suffering in that face. But, for me, the reconstruction of the whole body, represents the end of the agony and the start of a new life. Very impressive.
