Landmark

A most impressive defensive tower, strategically placed and one of the best landmarks in the city. All roads seem to come back to it from one direction or another.

I hadn't realised that after the initial climb up the spiral stairs, narrow at first, then wider, what an unbelievable view of the old town could be seen at the very top of the tower. It was a freezing cold day so we had to take care of the ice and snow around the top. Well worth the climb and... More

As you walk around the city the powder tower is a useful landmark to get your bearings . Unusual in that it is joined to more modern buildings and also contains the Powder Gate

The Powder Tower offers lovely views of Prague, but you have to brave the somewhat treacherous staircase in order to enjoy them. Be sure to wear stable shoes for the walk up. In winter, the bottom stairs become quite slick as they are covered in ice and snow. Also, at the top, the little stairs to step down and walk... More

Quick, fun, and cheap entry. Relatively easy hike up the narrow twisty stairs. Great views all around the city. If you only spend time in the Old City, you should go up a view all the other sites you are missing.

186 steep stairs but worth it. Nice views all around and interesting history. Won't take long but a good stop.

My partner is claustrophobic... he couldn't make it up the initial, very tight winding staircase so never got to experience the tower. Such a pity.

Being on the edge of the Old Town means that the Powder Tower is somewhat overlooked compared to the Old Town Hall tower on Old Town Square. The good thing about this is that there aren't hoards of tourists around and whilst you don't get the view of Old Town Square the other vistas are just as good. Well worth... More

Powder Tower is named after the gate it guards. It is part of the series of towers in Prague that forms the former fortification, all the way to Charles Bridge. Once you cross the tower, you are formerly out of Old Town and has ventured into the New Town of Prague. It’s actually quite interesting to trek from this tower... More

Staying in Stare Mesto (Old Town)

Neighbourhood Profile
Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighbourhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.
