About
Laterna magika counts its history since the year 1958. The first period, created by the director Alfred Radok and stage-designer Josef Svoboda began at the world exhibition EXPO 58 in Brussels, Belgium. The program showed in the Czechoslovak pavilion was named Laterna magika and later gave its name to the theatre in Prague. The second period started at the EXPO 67 in Montreal, Canada and as well as on the EXPO 70 in Osaka, Japan and the theatre travelled through the world. In the half of seventies Laterna magika became part of the National Theatre in Prague, with the artistic director Josef Svoboda, who was at the beginning of this special medium. Laterna magika uses combination of film projection and life stage media - dance, sound, lights, pantomime, black-theatre e.t.c. There is a basic effort which is creating the face of Laterna magika till today - searching the way to a specific theatre which is able to narrate a story by using of different themes and medias as well.

Nearly 700 hundred metres long, Wenceslas Square represents the most frequent and buzzing crossroads of the city. The National Museum in the upper part of the square watches over your spending spree in countless shops and retail stores lining the entire square, which ends at Na Příkopě, the most famous shopping street. When tired or broke, you can explore the city's underpasses, which can take you to the Old Town or to the courtyards of art nouveau houses with secret gems of greenery, white benches and rose bushes that provide unexpected peace in the midst of the city. Be sure to pay a visit to the traditional cafés, classic Czech pubs, cinemas and theatres. National Theatre near the river has a lot to offer to foreigners. Go to the river bank and enjoy live music and drinks while watching a sunset behind Prague Castle.

Black Light Theatre is a uniquely Prague experience-- but one visit will probably do you. Many of the black light theatres are tourist traps in the worst sense, rather expensive and cheezy with a bit of nudity thrown in, more flash than substance and a bit frayed at the edges. You will see little black light theatres all over Prague. My suggestion is to stick with the original in the theatre beside the National Theatre. They at least have good production values and more accomplished performers (and some intriguing visual effects). Others (and I won't bother mentioning names here) are little more than some painted cardboard and worn out tricks repeated over the 90 minute program. After the show at the National, you can walk right across the street to the nearby cafe for an after-theatre streusel or sacker torte and coffee--reasonable prices and a nice view of the river from a table by the window.

I am a theatre arts teacher from Canada and could only see a Lanterna Magika production as the season was winding down. This was a multi-media presentation of the legends and history of Prague. My expectations were not met. It was not a sophisticated production and I felt as though I were watching an amateur company. It had a few good moments and the seats were comfortable. I was glad I saw it despite the quality, as it gave me a little insight into the theatre community of Prague.

But I agree with the reviewer before me that it was painful to watch. I felt it was amateurish at best. I saw Cirkus. There was only a few minutes of black light in the very beginning, after which it was mostly a movie screen and clowns being clowns.
There was a point where I wanted to leave, since I realized it was not going to get any better. And like the reviewer before me, the lengthy and protracted curtain calls was a bit overkill since the performance was mediocre.

Watched "Podivuhodné cesty Julese Verna" and it was unfortunately terrible. The story is pointless, the characters forced, and the gags are not funny. It seems somewhat outdated. Admittedly I was relying on the less than complete English captions, but even so, it wasn't the least bit clever or entertaining. There are interesting costumes and visuals but they are lost in the awfulness of this spectacle. It's a shame, as it appears as a lot of money and work was invested on it.

My first big disappointment from Prague culture.
Sorry for my negativity, but :
1. This show doesn't have anything related to mirage, anyone would expect from legendary Laterna Magica.
2. Drunken player made fun from the audience (one of his first "jokes" was about the fact that only 47 people bought a full price ticket, other 350 get invitation and came for free or paid some symbolic price). Personally, I don't understand this sense of humor.
3. No, really not any, classical optical effects. I've been to this theater for two times in the past and though to take my kids this time. It was a waste of time and money.
4. The translation from Czech isn't appropriate. There are a lot of jokes told in Czech, when the local audience laugh and I simply don't have any idea why.
5. The punch line of the show is very disappointing.
6. Only positive thing - modern choreography, but I'd rather go to see it when the players respect the audience and not drunken!
Waste!!!

May be local audience may enjoy it, foreigners - never will.

Latina Magica is one of the theatrical styles that can be described as an artistic and cultural heritage. A legacy with almost the history of contemporary stage design developments as well as Prague's great four-year event( PQ). The style that Josef Svoboda has established as one of the most important contemporary theater designers. As a theater graduate with a degree in stage design and a member of the faculty of the Art University(Iran), who is familiar with almost all scene design styles, I saw Laternamagika as a unique performance. An exercise that does magic as its name implies. The energy of this performance is very high and speaks to the image and needs no words. The highly skilled bodies of the dancers and performers are unique. I had never been fascinated by any foreign and domestic performances, and with Laternamagika it happened to me as much as I wanted to be repeated, to be repeated and to be repeated ...

It's childish but NOT appropriate for children. It was wird, actually, it was disturbing.
Don't bother considering it as an adult. Children think it's funny but the sexual innuendoes aren't age appropriate.

Eadweard Helios Muybridge story was magnificient! Great dancers, excellent choreography and music. The storyline was easy to follow and it was just a great experience in all.
The tickets were really not given justice to the performance, less than 23 euros per ticket and the dancers gave it all. Lovely chairs :)

Saw "Prague Legends". Fusion of art forms, well prefomed. Wi did not recognise all the themes, but still the watching was fun. Go and see!

Went to see 2 performances:
1) Cube - about an hour long dance performance with the use of projections, experimenting with creating illusions), great music and altogether really interesting to see.
2) Human Locomotion - about 80-minute long show, a combination of drama (parts that are in Czech are with subtitles), dance and projections. It's about the dramatic life story of Edward Muybridge - pioneer of photography and motion pictures projections.
I was really pleasantly surprised with both - great shows, both were very modern and interesting multimedia performances.
Would strongly recommend!
