About
On the initiative of the newly created Czechoslovak government, in 1947 the National Suffering Memorial was opened on the site of the suffering of tens of thousands; it was later on renamed the Terezin Memorial. The key mission of the Terezin Memorial, the only institution of its kind in the Czech Republic, is to commemorate the victims of the Nazi political and racial persecution during the occupation of the Czech lands in World War II, to promote museum, research and educational activities, and look after the memorial sites connected with the suffering and death of dozens of thousands of victims of violence.

- Donna SLos Angeles, California16 contributionsYou Will Never ForgetOne of the finest tours that I have ever taken. Pavel has written 3 books about Terezin. His narration is fascinating, bone-chilling and most of all academic. It is a place with hidden stories and from the moment you are inside his van, Pavel lets you in on these secrets. He wants the world to know what happened here. It is a journey that I will never, ever forget. I feel honored that I was allowed to understand in detail, another sad aspect of what happened to the Jewish people during the war.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 29, 2023
- Sheila SHerndon, Virginia262 contributionsVisit this locationThis is a sobering place to visit but a valuable one, especially at this time. The location is well preserved and allows one to see a bit of what happened during that horrible time. The museum is worth the time but the children's drawings were hard to see when you knew of their final destinations. Definitely watch the film in the theatre.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten October 17, 2023
- Darrel SFredericksburg, Virginia7 contributionsInformative and Insightful tour of TerezinWe thoroughly appreciated Pavel Batel's guided tour of Terezin. The facility is about 45 minutes from Prague. Pavel used the time to give us a good background of the camp and helped contextualize what we were going to experience. At the various locations of Terezin, Pavel described what had occurred and then provided first-person accounts from his extensive research that underscored and clarified those events. The overall experience was extremely informative but also intense as he brought to life the events that are usually only glossed over in history books. I wholeheartedly recommend his tours; but, I caution participants that this is an emotional and thought-provoking experience.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 26, 2023
- kralik0vaOlomouc, Czech Republic5 contributionsSmoking policyExcellent place, as others say. The only problem is smoking. Unfortunately, it is allowed on the balconies and when a smoker lights up there, it affects several rooms in the vicinity. It wakes us up early in the morning and at night, we have to close the door. The clean Canarian air is away.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten March 3, 2024
- mtjb01Melbourne, Australia52 contributionsThe most amazing and sobering experience of TerezinWe booked a semi-private tour with Terezin Private Tours and Pavel Batel. Pavel is an incredible historian and a phenomenal guide. His knowledge of Terezin must surely make him the leading expert on this topic and to have him escort us and relate the less commonly known history of Terezin was a privilege. This is a sobering experience that leaves one reflecting on society and life. This tour with Pavel is the one tour that should definitely be done if visiting Terezin.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten April 15, 2024
- Mark DAntwerp, Belgium97 contributionsA real must visit historical memorialTerezin Memorial is a real must visit place. It consists of two parts. On the one hand, the former garrison town, surrounded by a complex of fortifications and bastions. Under Nazi rule, the residents had to leave and make way for a ghetto, where Jews were gathered awaiting deportation and certain death. Next to the garrison town is the 'little fortress', used as a military prison under Habsburg rule. This includes the cell of Gavrilo Princip, who shot the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 2, 2024

This was my second trip to Prague. I hadn't had time to go to Terezin during my first visit. I have been to several concentration camps, including self-guided visits. When I read the reviews about Pavel Batel, I knew that going on a Terezin tour with him was an experience not to be missed.
It's obvious Pavel knows the history of Terezin and the people. His dedication to his research adds depth to the information he shares. What is remarkable is the passion with which he tells the stories, creating an emotional and intense experience that is unforgettable. And not to be missed.
The Terezin tour with Pavel Batel was well worth my second visit to Prague.

Perfektní zkušenost! Doporučuji i lidem, kteří nevyhledávají téma kolem válečného období. 10/10
Perfect experience! I also recommend it to people who are not looking for a topic around the war period. There is a lot that has happened in Terezín and it should not be forgotten that history does not repeat itself. Pavel tells in such a compelling way that it forces other people to join Pavel’s group because they were unlucky and did not know about Pavel. 10/10

Pavel was an amazing tour guide in so many aspects. He has very in-depth knowledge about Terezin and of the Czech Republic. Throughout the tour, Pavel shared dozens of stories that brought the horrofying history of the Terezin memorial to life. He made my tour day unforgettable - especially as it was my first experience on a holocaust site. He was very accommodating with this fact and answered all of my questions with ease. Pavel’s personal insight working with holocaust survivors and their relatives was especially interesting for me. I highly recommend his tour guide services as you will be able to grasp the brevity of the horror in way that will be meaningful to you - from a range of experience or knowledge levels.

Did both forts one being the Nazi show camp the other being the ghetto and the crematorium. Went with an organised tour from Prague. There was a guide to show us round the small fort. One of the must see sites if travelling to Prague. The total trip took about five hours with travelling and you dropped in the city for afternoon site seeing.

2nd visit and the sheer scale and horrible nature of what went on here still affects me. I can’t start to imagine what it must have been like but I understand it enough to want to ensure it never happens again. The little museum is worth a visit as well as the small fortress on the edge of the town.

I was in Prague to visit my son who is studying there, and we were fortunate to be able to have Pavel Batel be our guide for a private day trip to Terezin. First impressions: Pavel is courteous and energetic. Pavel picked us up at my hotel and he began sharing information and stories immediately and throughout the ride to Terezin to prepare us for the day. Pavel’s knowledge, energy, passion made our tour the best we have ever encountered. The Terezin “Czech” history regarding Terezin is complicated to say the least as it is not simply the work camp and propaganda location as depicted by the Nazis. Pavel guides you through Terezin in a concise, informative, honest and respectful manner. If you want a vanilla tour, this is not for you. Pavel has spent many years interviewing survivors and researching Terezin beneath the surface. The way he conveys the suffering of the people sent to Terezin, the slave labor and starvation, the atrocities inflicted by the Nazis on anyone who was at Terezin (Jewish people and non-Jewish people), it affects you emotionally. When he tells you a story that happened on the very spot on which you are standing, you are transported back in time. The stories and information he has discovered over the his years of research is a gift we were fortunate to be able to share. It’s an emotional experience for sure, but we are grateful that we had Pavel to educate us.

We chose this tour group because of the excellent reviews and the most reasonable price. This tour with this gentleman is easily worth more than twice the price. We were a small group of 8 and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the intimate setting. This man is extremely well versed in Terezin history and so emotionally involved that you actually thought he had been there himself. He has written several books so the tour is as if you are reading a book on Terezin. His passion for the subject is incredible. I must say that this was the best historical tour I have ever been on. When I return to Prague I will definitely take this tour with him again to revel in this man’s magic.

Before my trip to Prague, I was strongly advised to take this tour of Terezin by family members who had experienced this tour the previous year. Wow, was I impressed by the whole day! From the time Pavel picked us up at our Hotel, until he dropped us off at the end of the day, I was fascinated by the history of the memorial and the knowledge of our guide. I learned a lot of the history of this unfortunate time in our world. I would strongly recommend anyone to set aside some time on their visit to Prague to see this memorial

We had a very interesting one day trip to Terezin concentration camp and Terezin jewish ghetto during the 2nd WW. Our trip started at noon from Prague, Republic Square and we came around 18.00. Our tour guide, Sofia gave us a lot of information not only about the history of Terezin, before, during and after the War, but also about Czech history, culture and the city of Prague. She has a deep knowledge of the Czech history and every day Chech life and she was always willing to answer to all our questions. She was helpful and she speaks very good English with a clear accent so that a non native English speaker can easily understand. The tour inside the concentration camp was conducted by a local guide who was very knowledgeable of the Holocaust and the Terezin history. We walked all around the camp and then we visited the cemetery and the crematorium. After that we continued to the town of Terezin by the bus, where there used to be the Ghetto. The museum is worth visiting with a lot of memories from the people who lived, suffered and died there. In general it was a full and very interesting and well organized tour. Make sure that you have water and a quick lunch like a sandwich to have in the bus because there are no food cantins.

Pavel Batel is an autodidact who has developed a masterful knowledge of the details of the Nazi occupation of Czeckoslovakia and the use of the Terezin Barracks as a concentration camp.
We were collected from our hotel and joined a group of eight in total for the 45 minute drive north from Prague, with several intereting stories on the way there. The day lasts about six or seven hours, with the majority spent in the main barracks town, with a visit to the museum, a secret synagogue and the crematorium. Pavel gave very detailed insisghts into the way the place ran and included vingnettes of interest. We theen went over to the smaller barracks where the stories were much more harrowing.
All this was delivered with power, knowledge and a very useful way of leaving some information missing, only to introduce it later at a suitable time which made the 'lecture' far more memorable.
This is not a quick visit but worth the time and money spent.

Yes, there is street parking available. It is a very small town and not a lot of people live there.

Does this bus tour go to the barracks? Does it cover the same sites as the tours that go by train?

The best way is to take a bus, it stops both by the Small Fortress and the former Ghetto Terezin. Thank you.

Gracias!

I will be catching the bus to Terezin from Prague. Is it possible to join a tour or are tours only for people who pay for the whole package as in getting collected from the hotel?
Also what would be the price to just have a tour around terezin?
