[Aug 2022] A beautiful baroque style church adjacent to the castle, the two bell towers with their characteristic shape are very beautiful while the interior is very detailed and decorated in a beautiful style. I liked it. Very pleasant to walk around this place

We all seem to ask fellow travelers where they've been, where they're going, and what they loved most.

That's how I wound up in Krakow. A tourist told me several years ago that this was the most beautiful city he'd ever seen. That was good enough for me plus my childhood babysitter was Polish. I liked her a lot and used to visit her almost every day after school just to say hi. She taught me the one Polish word I know; she said it was a bad word. I checked; she was telling the truth.

So those were my incentives to spend two weeks in Krakow. I always like to stay at least a week in a city so I don't feel as much like a tourist.

That fellow was right; Krakow is indeed beautiful in so many ways. Plus it has more churches than you can shake a stick at. Whatever that means.

Krakow has so many Roman Catholic churches that it got the nickname, "North of Rome". This particular church doesn't get a lot of press but it is really snazzy inside, opulent splendor, I'd say with all the baroque whatsits and Gothic thingamajigs.

I popped in here by chance when it started to mist and then drizzle during my walk around the Planty. The Planty's the park that rings the Old Town and is great for hunting horse chestnuts and plain old relaxing.

I'm not being formal in describing this church because I've seen so many churches in my life time. I just don't remember all the proper architectural nomenclature. See, I do know big words. Just lazy at research, depending.

Anyway, the three things that impressed me about this church more than any other in Krakow were the gilt barley twist supports throughout the nave reminiscent of the Vatican's St. Peter's, the plethora of Gothic confessionals, and the offer of bespoke confessions.

What's a bespoke confession you ask? Whoever heard of such an animal? Well, I made the term up, however...let's say you just did something unforgivable (well, let's hope not, but?) and you need to confess, pronto, and you only speak English.

Well, does St. Bernadynow's have the deal for you.

You can phone them and they'll arrange a confession in English just for you. That's right; it said so in English right on the church's front door.

I hope that deal is still going on; that's a great deal !

Or was that special just for me? Oops. Did God make it rain? Is that thunder I hear ? Lightening? Better examine my soul.

You can do as you wish; you knew that.

Didn't you?

The church of St. Bernard of Siena is just south of the Wawel hill. It was originally built in Gothic style, but it was destroyed in the mid-17th century. during the Swedish Deluge. It was promptly reconstructed in early Baroque style. It hosts an altar/mausoleum dedicated to St. Simon of Lipnica.
The church itself is rather unremarkable, both outside and inside.

This Baroque church from 1680 is dedicated to a controversial person. Bernardino of Siena (Italy) lived in the 1400s and is known for his antisemitism and instigating cruel violence against men practising sodomy and women accused of witchcraft. In general he preached that women should be in the domestic domain under the guard of father, brother, husband, or parish priest. Perhaps all understandable in a 14th century context, but we live in 2024.

This is a lovely church, located just next to the castle, and somehow dwarfed by it.
It's worth a peek inside as the interiors are lovely.

It is a really beautiful church. They seem to hold concerts there most evenings. I’m guessing they’re music students, but they were fantastic. It was a really lovely way to end the evening, listening to classical music in this beautiful setting.

We were out and about in Krakow and spotted the church almost tucked away in a corner and decided to have a look inside,
we were met by a church helper who offered us an audio tour free of charge but a donation was optional at the end of tour,
this church is probably the most beautiful church we have ever visited and would recommend a visit by all that are in Krakow,
the church is opposite the castle and the royal hotel,
pop in and be amazed and make a donation.

The Bernardino church at the foot of Wawel Hill is a sight to behold. The entire altar complex is covered with gold leaf. The effect is overwhelming. Only problem is that it was hard to photograph it with accurate impression. The church has an audio guide which is free for visitors to use. Stop in, if only to rest your weary feet after traipsing through Krakow.

This is near Wawel and is superb church outside and inside. You get audio guide and you can take photos here.
Great areas to view as you go round here.
The main pulpit is beautiful but it was not busy when we visited.
