Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it impresses with its beauty and simplicity. This is a magical place that is eagerly visited by residents of Zakopane and tourists. The building is a fine example of the Zakopane style and one of the most beautiful wooden churches in Poland. The temple stands on a high stone foundation. It has a high gable roof covered with tiles, and above the main entrance in a separate chapel we will see a carved figure of the Pensive Christ by Janos from Dembno. The interior of the chapel is also amazing. The main altar has the shape of a mountain hut, on the sides of which you can admire beautiful stained glass windows, also by Witkiewicz, on the right with the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa and the Piast Eagle, on the left - Our Lady of Ostra Bram and the Lithuanian Chase. The chapel in Jaszczurówka fits perfectly into the surrounding Tatra landscape. It is worth coming here to admire the wooden chapel built in the Zakopane style.

If you are visiting Zakopane and have 10 minutes this is a great little chapel in the woods to visit.

Our tour took us to this small wooden church that should be seen when in the area. We stayed maybe 10 minutes, which was enough to see the inside and outside of the building.

Coming down from our hotel in Cyrhla going to Zakopane center, we saw this cute wooden church by the side slope. We halted and made an instant visit. It is an antique Catholic Church in a wooded area. It is nestled in a " romantic setting " with a " homely ambiance ". Upon approaching the place, there is a simple information board about it.The interior is small with a fine altar of Jesus. It evoked moment of contemplation and peace since we were alone when we visited it. It was worth the visit. It added photographic album to our travel. Give it a visit, 15 minutes is enough esp. if you love photography !

One could miss this mountainside church, when driving on the main highway out of town, because it resembles a mountain chalet. However, this multiple storied wood church with an arcaded porch, built in the early 20th century, is a busy tourist stop because of its Zakopanian architectural style. For example, the church was built from flat logs and used no nails in its construction. The caulking between the logs was filled with packed braided wood chips that resembled heavy rope. Over the entry door there was a most unusual pose of a wood carved Jesus who sits with legs apart, one hand on his cheek, and looks rather tired.
The wood exterior had minimal carvings, mainly around its windows, but the interior had an intricately carved main altar and 2 small side altars. The main altar was unusual in that it had the shape of a Zakopanian church with the Virgin Mary and Jesus figures carved into each steeple. The 2 small side altars looked more like carved wood picture frames with a carved wood female religious figure in the center of each. Floral motifs were carved on the trim that decorated the walls, the wood hanging light fixture, and the window frames.
Other decor to look out for include the 2 stained glass windows on either side of the altar. One had the emblem for Poland (the crowned white eagle) and the other had the emblem for Lithuania (white rider on a red shield). Stanislaw Witkiewicz who designed not only the church, but also these windows, came from Lithuania and settled in the Podhale region. He probably wanted to commemorate the historic Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Reverse glass paintings, a style that the region is known for, were also hung on the side walls.
The interior of the church was narrow with 1 nave and benches on either side. It is still used for worship by Catholics. Admission is free. On the property were signs in various languages (Polish, English, German, French) that provided basic facts about the church. I was interested to see from 1 sign that Polish people in Chicago had donated money to help with the building of this church. There were stone stairs to climb to reach the porch of this church and the path through the woods behind the church. A parking lot was available at the side of the road.
I preferred the details in this church and its treed setting to the other Zakopanian style church in the village with its unique cemetery. We spent about 20 minutes at this attraction.

Do not leave Zakopane without seeing the Jaszczurowka Chapel. Ensure you pick the a time alone, without group tours milling about ,and go inside for a quiet moment. It is quite secluded, and at walking distance from the centre of town - and it is free... A beautiful place.

Nice little chapel, but we didn't see it at its best, on a winter afternoon with the light fading, but the snow made it special. Some carved work inside.

Quaint little church, all made of wood and built entirely by hand. Fixtures and statues were also carved by hand. A beautiful, peaceful place.
