It's not often one can take a photograph of a statue of Nicolaus Copernicus in his hometown, so when in Torun it's the thing to do. The statue is located in the Old Town square next to the Old Town City Hall. During the time I was there it was a popular subject for photographs. People informally lined up to get their pictures taken with the statue of the great polymath. We did!

It's a statue. It's very nice the town has put this up to commemorate their most iconic citizen and it's a great photo op but nothing more.

Long time ago, there was a belief that the sun revolves around the earth. This belief was refuted by Polish astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus. Copernicus was born in Torun, Poland and his statue is conveniently located right at the center of the Old Town.

This monument to Copernicus stands next to the Townhall on the Market Square is the symbol of the city. It's worth a look at, remembering how important his work was in redefining our understanding of man's place in the Universe...

Visiting Torun and not seeing Copernicus monument is like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope. If you ever get lost in the city - this should be your meeting point :-)

Even though he did, none of defenders of this theory could have understood him. He was rather German-speaking bourgeoises. However, during raid of the Teutonic Knights on Toruń, he took up the sword and defended the city.

The bronze statue of Copernicus that now stands opposite the Town Hall is due to Napoleon's casual remark to Torun's city fathers that Torun, the childhood home of Copernicus, should have a statue of him in the town square. Three hundred years after Copernicus death, a bronze Copernicus statue was finally placed on the square. It is an elegant statue showing a stern faced Copernicus, draped in an academic gown, with an astrolobe in his left hand; his index finger points to the sky indicating the reason for his importance - a connection to astronomy. The gold Latin inscription on the granite base states Copernicus's name and states he was a person who "moved the Earth, and held the Sun and heaven". The bronze monument is raised up high on the square, way above the heads of passersby. Visitors will not fail to see it. The benches around the statue have become a popular meeting place; sometimes, even groups like to have their picture taken of this statue, a landmark for the city.

A good location to have the statue - right outside the town hall in the Torun Main square. Torun is proud of the man that "stopped the sun".

He was a scientist and famous astronomer who indicated that the sun not the earth was the center of the universe. His scientific center and home are in Torin and well worth visiting.
