About
Discover the magic of the lake that attracts travellers from near and far. The current unique shape of the year did not emerge coincidentally. A tectonic hole made by the Bohinj glacier through the years, was once at the location of the present lake. Its path was obstructed by a huge rock which was so persistently scraped that the only thing that remained was the present island. The ice melted and the basin was filled with water, thus Lake Bled emerged, which is in some places up to 30 metres deep and quite popular amongst divers. 19 species of fish live in the lake, including carp, sheatfish and lake trout. Ducks and swans as well as diverse plants also swim and thrive on its surface.

- nidriksDorset, United Kingdom168 contributionsMagical clear blue Lake in the mountainsI'd read all about Lake Bled and it was one of the places I had really looked forward to as I travelled across Europe. I wasn't disappointed. I got the bus to Bled from Ljubljana. It cost me just €2, buying a ticket the day before from a very helpful English speaking lady at the bus station. I had wanted to book a different bus and she quoted €28. I was all ready to pay it but she let me know that was a private bus and if I waited I could pay the €2. The cheap bus is a bit slower but goes via the airport. Thanks for that. Lake Bled really is beautiful. The water is so clear and still, and the surroundings so picturesque. The climb to the castle is steep but not as long as to be a killer. The views from up there are stunning and you should do it. I then walked the circumference of the lake. It is about 6km and took me longer than a walk of that length should take me. I had stopped every few minutes to take photos though. I didn't get to the island. I personally felt happy that I had seen the best of it from the shore. It was a little pricier than I'd have liked to get a boat there so I chose not to. That is the one thing that was not so great about Bled. It really is a tourist trap. Food there is very expensive. I paid €7 for a sandwich! It's still worth a trip there though. Maybe take a packed lunch.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten September 18, 2023
- rama1Melbourne, Australia1,186 contributionsFairytale sceneryLake is a pretty good size and home to Slovenian Olympic rowing venue. Walking the 6km perimeter is well worth. Flat path either concrete or pebbles. Recommend going left (clockwise) from town as you get the part next to the road out of the way before there is hardly a sound. A number of lido areas to swim and innumerable photo opportunities .Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 20, 2023
- SnowyShastaPortland, Oregon2,314 contributionsAs beautiful as advertisedWe had seen pictures and heard of the beauty of Lake Bled, and we loved our time here. We stayed in the town for 3 nights, with one day spent driving and hiking in other areas nearby, and a full day spent enjoying Bled itself (including the separately reviewed castle, viewpoints, and highly recommended Vintgar Gorge). Our best views of the lake were probably from the Mala Osojnica viewpoint (45 minutes or so of hiking), plus other good ones from Bled Castle. We also enjoyed time spent following the path around the lake (about 4 miles; our hotel had bikes available that we were able to use) and on the lake itself. We chose to pay for a pletna boat ride out to the island; there are also swimming areas and other boats available for rent. That cost €18 per person, cash only, so be prepared if you choose to do that. The lake is beautiful and the area, although touristy, does allow you to find some moments of peace, solitude, and scenic views.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 26, 2023
- Chris NBury St. Edmunds, United Kingdom55 contributionsFantastic ViewsWe visited for a day and had great weather. We walked all the way around the lake, there are places where you can hire rowing boats or get on a pletna boat for 18 euros to go to the island in the middle. We opted for the pletna boat as it was very sunny and nice to be rowed to the middle. Once there you can go up the church tower but this is 12 euros. the views are fantastic from all areas of the lake with clear blue water. This is a must visit place in Slovenia, the only negative is the restaurants and eating places are not as good as Ljuljana and are pricey in comparison. We were told in high season the traffic is very heavy and gets backed up so best visit out of season if you can.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 7, 2023

- Tommy599Two Rivers, Wisconsin858 contributionsThe most beautiful location in all of SloveniaToday is Sunday, and the Saturday crowd is gone. Tom’s estimate is the crowd is down ½ of what it was on Saturday. We can only imagine once the weekend is over the area will be left to the hikers and us. We first went on an enclosed electric boat trip out to the island in the middle of Lake Bled, where they dropped us off for about an hour. The cost was 14 € PP and the slow oar-powered boat was 18€ (both go to the island and pick you back up in one hour. On the island there is a beautiful church (Assumption of Mary / Mother of God on the lake) as the center feature atop its wooded surroundings on the island. 6€ pp if over 65 got us into the church, up the clock tower and the museum. We went up the clock tower and rang the wishing bell in front of the altar They say if you ring the bell your wish will come true (“come on Rich meet us on the 30th”). Wow that bell rang all day as visitor after visitor cast their wishes. We then hopped on the sightseeing trolley for our 4-mile trip around the lake. Lots to see that you miss from the town’s view. Lots of hikers, which would have made it a little difficult (hazardous) for a bike rider if we rented them. You can rent electric bikes and ride around the lake for about $56 euros PP. We decided against such as there are way too many hikers on the trails / roads this weekend. We would have easily walked the four miles around the lake, but our days are already quite full (we also have many more busy days still to look forward to on this trip).Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 23, 2023
- WanderingOttersonsDenver, Colorado1,468 contributionsFantastic natureAs we spent a 4-day weekend here in town, we took several occasions to just come down by the lake and walk. With trails around the whole lake, you could easily take a day to walk around it and make several stops for photos, lounging or food (in some areas). We also took a lovely September afternoon and went to Grajsko kopališče which is the bathing/swimming area under the castle to lounge on some rented chairs and take a dip in the lake, which was surprisingly still a good temperature for the time of year. Absolutely beautiful landscape all around the lake with sooo many photo worthy opportunities.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 4, 2023
- PathinBhubaneswar, India186 contributionsSerene and beautiful Lake BledWeather permitting, this is a must-see place in Slovenia. We visited on a sunny winter day, and the lake was sparkling like a blue jewel against the white cliffs that surround it. Being low season, it was not crowded, but there were only about four restaurants close to the lake that were operational. Rest were closed. The boat ride to the island is also irregular during winter. Regular bus services from Arriva company (Google search Arriva Ljubljana to get the website address) are available from Ljubljana bus station. The one-way ticket is Euro 5.70, and it takes about 90 mins to reach Bled. There are two bus stops in Bled - the Bled Union stop is closest to the lake. The same bus then continues to Lake Bohinj. Please be aware that the tickets can be purchased only by paying in cash, both at the bus station and from the bus driver. While purchasing your ticket from Ljubljana bus station, you are handed a return bus schedule so that you may plan your return to the city.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 13, 2023
- PhilMaloneFootscray, Australia1,472 contributionsPretty but overcrowdedDoing a boat trip on Lake Bled is a must do when visiting Slovenia. However, be prepared for crowds - even in September, which is out of peak season. The views are pretty, but quite frankly they are not the prettiest I have seen in other countries - a bit overrated. It was a pleasant experience boating to and alighting at the island (Cerkev Marijinega) and provided lots of great photo opportunities of the lake and mountains from the vantage point in the middle of the lake.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 19, 2023
- SpressyWoodbridge, United Kingdom315 contributionsCheap day out.Direct bus from Ljubljana - don’t use train. It’s €2 each way (yes you read that correctly)… Don’t book tours, walk up to the castle . Don’t take the shuttle. It’s 15 minute walk and I’m not as fit as I used to be and I was fine. Walk around the lake - 6 kms. It’s a walk, not a hike but so take. Bottle of water and suitable wether protection. We went in December so decent coat, hat and gloves. Wear sensible shoes tho. We didn’t do island. We were there for 6 hours. Was a really good day out. Prices are a little higher than Ljubljana but nowhere near other European tourist traps.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 24, 2023

Enjoyed this place, great for photos and very picturesque, although wasn’t expecting a busy A-road right next to the walkway around the lake which kinda spoiled it for us.
Water was quite muddy too and not many facilities or places open for a rest or refreshment.
Part of the lake was also closed off due to construction so we had to hike through someone’s garden to get back to the car.
Disappointed that the boats cost €12 each to go to the tower.
Bonus point there was free parking near the ski lift but I imagine that was because we were there out of season (February).
We hired a car for the day from Sixt as the bus service was very limited in February and this enables us to drive around and it was only £23 9am-7pm. We personally Preferred lake bohinj, which was more mountainous and very stunning. Water was ice clear.

Lake Bled is as beautiful as all the reviews say. The lake is so clean you can see to the bottom, and there are small fish swimming around. As you might expect, it's become very commercialised. You have to pay 9 Euros per person to go swimming in the lake (for the whole day, or 7 euros after 3pm), so it's worth taking a whole day out to spend there. There are inflatables, etc. and a water slide. We took a bus from Ljubljana to Bled, which cost about 12 euros - beware the traffic near the lake in the summer is awful! It took 2 hours to get there instead of one. You are not supposed to take a picnic to the grounds of the lake. As a result there is hardly any litter, but it means it is quite expensive to eat there. We ate at the first cafe by the lake that you come to if you're walking from the bus station and the food was good, if a little overpriced. If I came again, I would have spent the whole day there to make the most of it. I wouldn't recommend an organised trip where you only get a few hours there.

No motorboots are allowed on the lake and that is what is so great. You can swim or kanoe or whatever everywhere. It is clean and quiet. This year, due to corona everyone told us it was very quiet. Other years it can be really full of tourists. I thought some places were still crowded, but it was still ok. You can walk along the full lake and continuously enjoy the scenery.

The highlights for us were taking a row boat out for around 1 hr 45 mins , with my wife in the stern and me on the oars and Dean Martins greatest hits playing on full volume from the bottom of the boat whilst we meandered around the crystal clear waters of the lake. cost 30 euros value priceless !
our advice, forget about the castle, they should pay you to walk up there, seriously its a bit of a hike and certainly nothing , and i mean nothing could have made me part with a further 26 euros for the dubious opportunity to explore the castle.
Personally i think the Ljubljana castle which is free to explore the majority of places is much much nicer and beautifully and sensitively enhanced by some modern upgrades. I dont know who the architect was but i hope they paid them well because they have done a cracking job of restoration and creating purposeful spaces that are a delight. well done.
Back to lake bled. We tried the bled cake, ho hum, dont bother, ive eaten french vanilla custard slices in Australia and many other places that were significantly better for less.
The Zaka pizza from the camp ground cafe/ restaurant off the walking trail near the boat house is another story altogether. This is a pizza with a smack you in the face take no prisoners fantastic taste. It was worth the bus trip just to eat it. fantastic.
Anyway .... in summary give the castle a miss , give the church a miss, give the bled cake a miss, spend your money just lazing around in a rowboat with the love of your life then take a stroll back to Zaka Restaurant and have the Zaka Pizza - lifes great.

I had high expectations about lake Bled. So we choose it for our end of the year celebration. It is nice and elegant, but overpriced... just like any other sky resort.
End of the year party was very nice (with Beatles music) and some fireworks.
But the town is overbuild with mide rise hotels in the lake front that take away the charm of the older german and swiss style chalets.

So beautiful and picturesque! If you stay at a hotel on the lake definitely get a room with a balcony lake view, you won’t be sorry. We were at Lake Bled in March and were fine with just sweatshirts. Some days the area was foggy, some days clear and some snowy. This was great for completely different looking pictures in the same place. Lovely to walk around town and the lake itself. Go over to the island and also do the castle.

Maybe it’s because I was used to visiting small and quite places in both Croatia and Slovenia, but I found this place to be a bit too touristic. What bothers me is not that it has a lot of people, because that’s not really a problem, what bothers me is that because of its shops, the loud music in the restaurants and the immense hotels (that ruin the landscape, by the way), it just feels like a place designed for visitors, not for its natural and historical beauty.
I don’t know, it just bothered me that everything was expensive and designed to attract tourists.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate because of this. In fact, I spent the New Years Eve here and enjoyed it a lot (they had a Beatles tribute, fireworks on the countdown and a Christmas market with good food).
Since it was a special occasion, I think it was good to celebrate and stuff, but on a daily basis, I’d prefer a natural lake, with local businesses and fair prices.

It feels like a scam. Like they are trying to squeeze people for money.
The lake is gorgeous, but everything has changed since last year.
You cannot swim nor even sit on the grass anywhere around the lake except in very small enclosed spaces that are overflowing with people crammed together like sardines during a global pandemic.
Insane!
It costs €9 per person to enter the area where you can swim. But the swimming area is smaller than a small pool. The area to sit in the grass is packed and there's a line to get in.
Lake Bled feels like a scam now. What a shame.

I visited Lake Bled on Christmas Eve and absolutely loved it. It’s simply stunning! You can take a little boat out to the island, although due to lack of time, I wasn’t able to do this (I’ll have to come back one day). Instead, I had a lovely walk round the lake. There’s a good footpath to walk around the lake, and plenty of benches along the way for you to sit and admire the view. Being Christmas eve, it was very festive and beautifully decorated, with a little Christmas market/Christmas food and drink stalls in one area along the lake. There are some shops, bars and restaurants/cafes by the lake for you to buy some souvenirs and grab the local custard and cream cake (which I HIGHLY recommended - I got mine from the Devil Cafe Bar by the lake. So yummy!). During a trip to Slovenia, a visit to Lake Bled is s must. Highly recommended.

We are travelling to slovenia in early may and wanting to visit lake bled. We are trying to do it without a vehicle. We want to visit the usual cool spots like vintgar gorge, hike the trail and visit the national park. Is this possible and how would people recommend it?
Written August 28, 2023
I believe it would be possible. The pass was closed when I visited. Not sure if this was because of the national flooding? There was a bike hire place, maybe several, and I would have had a go on the big zip wire but orient book in advance and couldn't wait

How do people get here from ljubliana which is the closest train station and how much
Written May 26, 2022
The train station is miles away from Bled. You still need to catch a bus from the station. I caught the bus from Ljubliana direct to Bled. About 45 minutes on a pretty route through many villages. It was about 11 euros for a return ticket. The bus station at Ljubliana is opposite the train station.

Also what’s the best way of getting there from the airport??
Any other useful info for that time of year (what to do etc) would be extremely appreciated
Thanks.

Written October 23, 2019
