Must visit if you love paintings and 19th century art
My favorite museum in Ljubljana is pretty big and offers a great immersion into Slovenian art, hosting major Slovenian painters such as Janez Šubic, Matevž Langus, and Ivan Vavpotič, as well as European artists. The cost of the ticket is 10 EUR, but you definitely get a lot back for this amount. I spent about 2 hours on different floors and appreciated the way the museum was organized, the art displayed, the calmness of the staff, and their professionalism as well.

    Pretty Average Collection
This is a lovely place to visit, an old 19th Century gallery has been extensively extended with a glass building but the art collection is fairly average in the context of European city galleries. One or two stood out and one female portrait artist in particular. However, the shop is quite simply non functional and Best avoided. I tried to buy 6 postcards. I waited patiently in the queue while the girl behind the counter fiddled with her computer and typed the items into her machine for the customers in front of me. That was 5 minutes. So I presented my six cards. I asked her how much they would be, and she said about €1 each, although some of them are discounted. She then began typing into her computer exactly what was written on the back of each postcard in order to identify which ones they were, and how much they were. For each postcard, it took about four or five minutes. I was beginning to get very impatient, but eventually she did all six. I then asked her how much they would cost and she said €16.50. I said forget it. She said it’s very old technology. I said no, with old technology everything had a price we could see the price, you knew the price, we handed over the money and that was the end of that. It took seconds. I left the shop and I left the postcards behind. Pity, there were some nice ones. No one can convince me that computers have made things better after that !

Lovely compilation of Slovenian art works
The museum has a fair collection of Slovenian paintings and sculptures. The audio explanations accessible via QR code were interesting. The permanent collection covers from the middle age Christian art works to modern impressionists. Of course it’s not Louvre nor The National gallery in London. However, in my opinion, the Slovenian paintings and sculptures deserve better appreciation. With the rather unimpressive reviews, I was really pleasantly surprised by the collections in this gallery. The Slovenian scenery in the paintings are also nice. And I also loved their temporary collection.

    Narodna galerija
"Narodna Galerija" (National Gallery) in Ljubljana is the national art gallery of Slovenia. It was founded in 1918, and moved to the present location in 1925. It hosts a permanent art collection from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. The original of the Baroque Robba fountain can be seen in the central glass gallery, where it was moved after restoration in 2008. It is a large gallery, on two floors plus a basement, and it is very well organized. Also the rooms of the gallery are beautiful. There are not many big names among the authors represented, but everything is very good, especially the section dedicated to Middle Age sacred art. Works on display include artists such as Massimo Campigli, Giovanni Andrea Carlone, Luca Giordano, Matija Jama, Abraham Janssens, Jacob Jordaens, Élisabeth-Louise Vigée-Le Brun, Cornelis de Wael and many others.

    Great collection of Slovenian impressionists
I was very impressed with this museum. Of particular interest to me were the rooms devoted to the Slovenian impressionists. They're on the second floor, towards the end if you follow the recommended route. However, I recommend that you go to these galleries first, as they are the very best in the museum, at least according to my taste in art. The museum in general has a very strong collection and I recommend it highly. I consider this the best museum in Ljubljana.

National gallery is the most interesting and rich museum in Ljubljana for frequent visitors. Why? Many museums have interesting colourful permanent exhibitions from time to time, some prepare excellent temporary exhibitions. Just National gallery has always three, four or more different exhibitions. Permanent exhibition is the most interesting – with help of guides even more understandable. You need to visit gallery several times. They care for women artists and prepared an exhibition of Elda Piščanec in spring 2022. She was interesting, nearly unknown painter. Similar is half hidden exhibition (in the cellar) about sculptor Ivan Štrekelj.

Specialists prepared new exhibition about Matej Sternen. Less known painter and restorer was really perfect in using colours and he left us many portraits of beautiful women in clothes or without dresses. It is nice to visit this exhibition. Permanent exhibition is also nice and you wu+ill need at least two hours to walk around.
Gallery and the works of art there are the best selection of Slovenian art from Gothic to contemporary.

Soooooooo boring. Nothing really interesting here other than the nice building. Layout is pretty neat hence the additional stars. Again, art is so subjective but I have to say there’s nothing special compared to many other galleries. Go only if you need some place to kill time. At least it’s quiet here.

A nice place to spend a rainy day. Included as part of the Ljubljana Card (definitely got my money's worth). The art was fine, but the building itself was exceptional. In a part of the city where there are multiple museums in close proximity.

Beautiful building and a very nice collection of paintings. The first floor I liked more than the base floor. The religious section was not for me but the landscapes op slovenia on the first floor and the beautiful hall was worth the visit.

Beautiful museum with a mix of art styles- religious and secular of various years. I enjoyed this museum. It was just a bit awkward how when you entered a room the staff follows you glaring.
