Description:

National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest and the largest museum...

National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest and the largest museum institution in Slovenia. It was founded in 1821. The museum palace in the very centre of Ljubljana was built in 1888 and was the first building in Slovenia, assigned exclusively to culture. The permanent archaeological exhibition reveals the unique past of Slovenia. Among other great exhibits you can see the earliest musical instrument in the world, the 60,000-year-old Neanderthal flute as well as the situla from Vače.

I thought the museum was absolutely first class. There were odds and ends of Roman, Greek, Egyptian etc.stuff, but if you want those you go to the original site; so I didn't even bother to look. On the history of the area and the Slovene people it was excellent and mostly explained in English as well as Slovenian. That was... More

The superb permanent collection has some real treasures and is surprisingly compact, so quite do-able in an hour. Or you can study in detail the history of the area – from Neanderthals to the Middle Ages - for longer. Objects date from 100,000 years ago to the present, with many items from a few thousand just before the Romans and... More

We only came here because it was raining heavily. It was only OK. We were a bit disappointed really. The history of Slovenia section was fairly interesting and in both English and Slovenian but the rest was solely in Slovenian so while the animal exhibits were good to look at we didn't learn anything. The statue of the romantic boy... More

Be warned!!! Went on 21.7 and the flute was missing due to unexplained reasons from 24.6 leaving behind a replica. Unbelievable!! Rest museum is ok but not worth of 6€ since its too small and the main attraction is not there!!

I did not do the Natural History section, only the National Museum. If this is the only history museum you visit in Ljubljana, you may wonder why it only goes through the Middle Ages. Because there's a spectacularly good History of Slovenia in the Castle as well as the Museum of Contemporary History in Tivoli Park. This museum focuses on... More

We visited here in our limited time. Its collections were rich. We especially liked the objects belonging to Roman period.

Great museum to wander through. Spend as much or little time as you like. I went into the National Museum half (not the Natural History half). Not only artifacts as mentioned in other reviews but very modern, computer-generated visuals as assistance/additional info, etc. Outside, also Roman ruins. For example, milestones. All in a free, easily accessible glass house.

There are two museums in the one building. The natural history museum and the national museum. I only visited the national museum due to a lack of time but I was very happy with what I got for the price. There are exhibits here you cannot see anywhere else, for example a Neanderthal flute, and it is great for getting... More
