Cemetery is far more than group of nice chapels for the last farewell. It is city with more than 150.000 buried people: victims of the First and Second WW, victims of the battle for independence of Slovenia, young an old people from Ljubljana and Slovenia. There is much special small architecture, graves, decorated with sculptures, trees, flowers. It is interesting... More

Since it is an operating cemetery you should dress properly and act respectfully towards mourners at the funeral services

On the old part of Cemetery Žale you can find graves and gravestones from very famous slovenian people like poets, writers, arhitects, doctors etc. There is also small Jewish cemetery. You can also see italian and austrian graves from 1. world war. The cemetery is most beautiful in autum. Then you can see all colors of nature: red, yellow, green...... More

Plečnik did a great job capturing the eternity of a post mortal soul into the pillars and monuments of the Žale. The nicest is the collage of different grave stones. It is huge cemetery and very nice. Good for tranquility and a walk.

There is a collection of stunning chapels by Joze Plecnik right at the front of the cemetery on the right hand side, between Med hmeljniki and Zalska ulica. I went on a Sunday and the area was closed, so I went again the following day when it was open. I think this section is only open Monday-Friday, but best to... More

This is a place to visit for all fans of great Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. The front part shows his sense for greatness and for details at one point.

We enjoyed our half day walking around this cemetery, so well-kept and organized. We enjoyed the special areas for Jews, neonates, Russians, Italian soldiers.... It was difficult to find but we found the grand entrance, opposite of where we parked. We had to walk to the church first and then it was beyond that. The grand entrance is worth it... More

Speaking of of active cemetary, architecture is great, this is th front part. The rest is still pretty nice. Some graves have normal gravestones, others have small or big tombs. Really interrsting. Also war graves, airplane crash graves, infant (aka. The innocent), etc. It can seem depressing, but dying is a part of life cycle. This is also represented by... More

A group of valedictory chapels near the cemetery. Each one is in different style. They are work of Jože Plečnik, an architect from Ljubljana as the huge entrance with many columns. Each funeral in Ljubljana starts there. You can visit the place; no entrance fee for tourists. You need to respect the mourners there.
