- Travel 360123 contributionsThe most charming riverfront area!!This is one of the best river areas to enjoy! There are so many trees, bridges, and lovely buildings lining both sides! The restaurants all have lovely umbrellas and sidewalk seating. For a capital city in a European country the OldTown river area is unbelievably safe, clean, no panhandlers, no buses running you down, no exhaust fumes...Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 28, 2024

We had lunch by the canal on a beautiful fine day, had drinks by the canal as the sunset and went for an early morning walk before the crowds. There were always different ways to admire this beautiful part of the cityVisited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 15, 2024

Live commentary gave you some of the history of the town. It also takes you out to the quieter end of the townwhichis nice for a sunny day.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 20, 2024

The Ljublanica canal runs through the old town and is a focal point of the old city. The famous Dragon bridge and Triple bridge run over it.
It looks fairly clean which is nice.
Its nice to sit beside in one of the many cafes and have a beverage while people watching and watching some of the little boats that run up and down it.
Its just a part of the city focal point that you don't really notice as its not an overly wide or exciting or visually impressive canal but it is an important part of the city features.

Today (4pm 25th Sept) I caught the boat shown in the main photo. There are at least three different boats on this stretch of the river. I caught the one that you can pay for with the Ljubljana city Urban card.
There was an extra 4 euro to pay for the local guide. She gave an enjoyable talk to accompany the 45 minute boat ride up and down the river near the main part of Ljubljana. She was well worth the 4 euros, in fact I afterwards thought I should have tipped her at the end.
It is worth taking a boat river ride as it is good to see the old town and nearby green spaces from a different angle. The bridges and the green spaces slightly further out particularly.
There was a short stop for a comfort break and to get a drink.

Walking along the Ljubljanica Riverfront you will come across many bridges. The most beautiful are certainly the Treponti, the work of the architect Jože Plečnik, but there are others worthy of note, from that of the Dragons to that of the Butchers, Shoemakers and Fishermen. When the city is decorated for the Christmas holidays this area becomes more scenic, there are beautiful views to capture with a photo. You can see from a distance the Church of the Annunciation illuminated with the giant tree or the Castle illuminated in blue, the many bars open until late, yes, during the Christmas holidays Ljubljana is truly magical.

On one side of the canal, we enjoyed a lovely lunch along the water. On the other side we shopped in the marketplace. We crossed over the canal multiple times, on each of the bridges. It is a silent but pretty presence as you wander along both sides of it.

The River Ljubljanica Canal is a versatile place to visit at different points in your day. There is a wide choice of cafes and restaurants with local and Mediterranean cuisine. Historical buildings and bridges pop up regularly on your way. Cool artisanal bars invite you to wrap up the day in style. It's a part of town I found myself revisiting regularly during my stay in Ljubljana.

The boat sails down the river and back for more than half an hour. You only see some houses and bridges on this stretch. It is also easy to do on foot and that saves €14 per person. In our opinion, it adds little.

Lots of boats to choose from. Ours was €12 for an hour. Not a lot to see but relaxing and enjoyable. We went early, 10am and had the boat to ourselves for first part. At 10.30am a good few more got on and glad we weren't on it in afternoon as it got very hot

Qualcuno sa dirmi come' il mercatino di natale ?
Written August 2, 2016
I mercatini natalizi in sé sono molto modesti comparati ad altri in Europa, ma l'atmosfera natalizia della città è magnifica.
