Neighbourhood: Margaret Island
For Budapest, this island between the banks of the Danube represents a green oasis, especially during summer when its emerald spaces are much enjoyed by both locals and tourists. The gardens here are very picturesque; the flowers in full bloom give the landscape a variety of hues; the fountains add an air of freshness, making walks peaceful, joyful and romantic. A leisurely stroll will uncover a variety of sites, even the ruins of a medieval Franciscan church and convent are still visible.

The island's zoo was the saddest sight, animals clearly neglected, who certainly didn't belong there in their small wire cages. It was closed, and we did not see a single person there to be able to ask, there was no canopy over them to protect them from the weather. But the saddest of all were the imprisoned eagles, birds that under other circumstances would fly freely in their sky, live imprisoned in cages, with nets over them so that they cannot fly.

Small “zoo” on Margaret island. The eagle enclosures were way too small! Eagles looked depressed and couldn’t even fly around and spread their wings properly. Storks were roaming about and not in an enclosure however they can’t fly away because their wings seem to have been clipped. Deer had a bit of space but still not enough.

I get that this is supposed to be a small 'zoo' just for Margaret Island but it is literally the saddest sight ever. All of the animals look neglected and sad. So many of them were losing fur/feathers. There was no sign of any welfare staff the entire day we spent there. I'm so glad that you do not have to pay to see this sight as i wouldn't feel comfortable if I'd supported that poor standard of treatment.

This used to be a petting zoo and has now become a rather ugly and neglected enclosure for some mammals and birds, none of which look happy nor particularly healthy.
Sad.

While only small, it was a pleasure to walk around as there is no entry fee.
There are 4 Welsh pony's that are more than happy to be stroked. And you can have a short ride on one for only 500 Huf.
Hundreds of ducks, birds and chickens.
Plenty of Deer, that have plenty of grazing room.
There are Storks gathered around a giant tree stump with Rabbits usually fast asleep at the base.
There is also a conservation are for numerous Buzzards and Eagles that if out in the wild, would not survive. The vets here managed to save their lives and they now live here safe. Unfortunately, the area doesn't recieve any funding from the government and so they have a board just outside the eagle part showing details of how you can help by donating.
Rather heart warming to see how well looked after all the animals seem to be, and also to see so many beautiful birds being protected for the rest of their lives.

This Pet Zoo gives shelter and life to many rescued animals. My favorite are the storks. Most of them were hit by high-voltage wires near their nests. The storks would like to build a nest on the electric poles, and unfortunately, in Hungary, though there was a promise, in most places, the wires are still not insulated. In the fall of 2006, about 200 white storks perished on the border of Újtikos in a short section of the wire due to an electric shock. These storks are among the few survivors who will probably never be able to fly longer. They are safe here, they are in pairs, they spend, and they are essentially entirely free. They don't try to escape, because they realize that it is a secure place for them. I talked to one of the caregivers who was happy to report that one of their storks was able to fly a short distance. I hope he is the exception, who will be fully rehabilitated. Of course, the bunnies do not have to be scared; they run around merrily in every corner of the Zoo. There are three ponies as well, and they can be ridden for a fee. Although there is a warning, that they may bite, I have seen them happily run to all the children and let themselves to be caressed. Peacocks are walking around, including an unfortunate tailless peacock. Most likely, visitors were deprived of its ornamentation. Above the zoo are large Turkish hazelnut trees, which are now dropping their crop for the delight of visitors and squirrels.
Especially if you're with kids, this Zoo is a must.

Really pleased to see lots of rescued animals in good condition and with appropriate surroundings. While walking around Margaret island, it is worth stopping by if you like animals. Mostly rescued birds from Europe but a lot of variety and colour and it's free! You can leave a donation at the door, but seeing how well it is maintained, the zoo certainly deserves your loose change.

When we came there it was closed (end of March). As I remember it opens in the beginning or in the middle of April. You can see pretty much of all animals from outside, mostly these are birds.

Not really a zoo, it a small area with some friendly animals, some birds, peacocks, rabbits a pony and a few ducks. Kids will enjoy it. You can ride the pony and pet it as well.

Like all zoos it makes you feel a little sorry for the animals. You soon realise the massive eagle only has one wing so would be dead if not in captivity and I'm not sure why the storks don't just fly off...maybe they like it there. The ponies nibble at the mud but are friendly and like the attention. It's free to get in and seems clean and well maintained.
