About
With its 170 years history the Fiumei Road Cemetery has by now become a cultic place just like Père-Lachaise in Paris. However, instead of the graves of Molière, Chopin and Jim Morrison, here you can see those of Ady, Jókai, Arany, Kossuth, Erkel, Faludy, Jancsó and Imre Kertész. Besides being the resting place of the prominent personalities of the Hungarian nation since 1849, the cemetery preserves the imprints of different historical eras. You will find the largest number of important personalities of the Hungarian history and culture buried here. Most of the tombs have historic value since they are works of reputable architects and sculptors. The grave park, that resembles an arboretum lies on 56 hectares, is also known for its rich flora and fauna. The unique graveyard has been under the management of the National Heritage Institute since 2016.

This place is fantastic. When we visited it had been snowing and it was so calm and peaceful. Signposts to some of the more popular graves which must be useful for people who visit with the intention of seeing these. Some very interesting mausoleums and memorials - wish we could have dedicated more time to exploring the whole cemetery.

This is a really cool cemetery, many of the graves are very old, almost covered in vines. If you like extravagant mausoleums, you have come to the right place and if you, like us, love statues overlooking the graves, this is definitely the place for you. Free entrance and well kept. Don’t give this a miss!!

First it is very easy to spot it and to find it. Just behind the Shopping mall Arena.
You can park it in the Arena. Entrance is free.
You can see and learn a lot of Hungarian history at this beautiful cemetery.
It is quite big and has a lot of hidden statues and mysterious meanings, so pay attention.
If you do visit it, please be respectful.

One of the grand cemeteries of Europe, Fiumei Road is worth the jaunt if you are a fan of gardens, history or cemeteries. Not far from the entrance is a spectacular old carriage in glass, and that sets the tone for the place. Get a map and seek out some of the notorious, or stumble into them like we did. Also, shortcut: not everyone in the cemetery is named salad...we looked that up late in our visit and realized it means family.

This cemetery is a must see in Budapest. The statues and grounds are absolutely beautiful. The cemetery is so big you could spend hours wandering around. They also have clean public restrooms if needed.

A place not too be missed once in Budapest !
I firstly discoverd it in a cold winter in the 90's. It was covered of snow, and with almost nobody there...
I returned to the cemetery twice this year, in March on my won, and with a friend in October. I spent hours there each time I visited it.
Very helpul staff at the entrance and free map and booklet.
A bit similar to the Père Lachaise in Paris. Amazing mausoleums and graves.
I simply love the place !

announced as the local Pere Lachaise, we tried. Well, that's perplexing. It all depends on what you're looking for.
It's quite large and the graves don't touch each other at all. Sometimes leaving the impression that the burial arrived there almost by chance.
Very beautiful tombstones and excess mixed with simplicity.
In short, disappointed all the same. Any experience is worth taking but fortunately we had time in Budapest. move on if you are short

Yes it is free to visit but there are better reason :history, tradition, atmosphere, tranquility. You can visit the graves of freedom fighters, the Red Army (1945), Communist big wigs, great figures of the past, opera stars and revolutionaries. Give yourself at least 2 hours to gain even a flavour of this huge place. Do not be put off by the busy main road;there are places to cross the road. Get a free map at the main gate to make sense of the layout.
We also went at night on the Day of the Dead and saw so many graves lit up by the candles left by family and friends. The Communist mausoleum is grim and Stalinist : an echo of an unhappy past.
Nearest Underground station is Keleti pu.

A few minute walk from the Keleti train station and metro, this incredibly beautiful historic city cemetery is a peaceful sanctuary in the city. Numerous prestigious Hungarian families , politicians, poets, heroes and artists are interred here in magnificent crypts and tombstones; all in an immaculately landscaped park setting. Take your time to roam freely thru this vast setting and you can ask information at the front desk regarding the different sections of the cemetery, I believe you can purchase a map at the entrance which may give helpful info of the cemetary's more illustrious residents!

We (a couple) visited Kerepesi Cemetery several times and every visit was excellent!
It is rather a park full of sculptures and monuments than a cemetery. A big part of Hungarian history can be visible by walking from one part of the park to another. Besides pretty family graves made in 19th century, you will also be able to see graves of the famous Hungarians like actress Blaha Lujza and politician Kossuth Lajos. In other parts of the cemetery, you will see monuments of victims of Hungarian Revolution of 1956 from both Hungarian and Soviet sides. Also, there is a huge part of cemetery (located right at its entrance) that is dedicated to Soviet soldiers, who died in WWII on the territory of Hungary.
Keep in mind that the size of this cemetery is huge and that it usually works till sunset. You will need at least 3 hours to cover everything.
After visiting Kerepesi Cemetery, you will certainly learn a bit of Hungarian history and their respect to its heroes and victims.

Hello. I am interested is it safe for a girl to go alone for a walk to the cemetary, during the day of course.

Hi, just to let you know that I have never had reason to be afraid or even apprehensive whilst visiting the KEREPESI cemetery. People are wandering around looking at the gravestones and it is a very open space. Apparently in the summer, people take picnics there and dine in the open spaces.
