We visited the citadel as a stop on our hop-on/hop-off bus tour. This was key since the bus drove us up this extremely elevated location. Bring your camera; bring cash; bring sunscreen; and bring a blanket! We went on a beautiful day. You get a great panorama view of Budapest, including the chain bridge and parliament. First place we visited on our trip was totally blown away by the stunning views. Spend time reading the history displayed. Just relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of the Citadel.

It's a very important historical place in the city. It also has a great view over the Danube and a nice walking path up and down the hill.

It is one of the best locations in Budapest to take a photo of the city. It is easy to get there even by using public transportation. A must to come here! :-)

By far, this is the best point from where you can get the best view of Budapest. It is a green area, spectacular view. Try to visit at sunset.

My son and I are travelling around together for a week in Europe. We wanted to see this attraction. The views are great and the statues are good too. There is not a lot there other than that. I definitely wouldn't take young children.

It has been a long and winding uphill walk on a hot July day. The view from the top was worth the effort. The view was breathtaking and fascinating. We spent quite some time catching our breaths and recovering from the walk... Take something to drink on your way up there specially on a hot day..

Staying in Gellert Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
Gellert Hill
If you want to treat your camera to some amazing scenery, Gellért Hill is a must on your itinerary. A funicular journey from the Chain Bridge along the hillsides provides a fast connection between Buda and Pest, hoisting visitors to panoramic vistas. Once on top of the hill, you’ll find the Citadel dominate the landscape with its imposing 19th century construction, a site that’s hard to keep your eyes on without being distracted by the phenomenal view over the Danube and the eight bridges crossing. Once on Gellért Hill however, one mustn’t miss the famous Gellért Baths. Budapest is renown for its thermal waters and its baths, and the Gellért Baths are housed in an impressive art nouveau structure. Its interior design, with its many mosaics, recalls the preceding relationships the city has had with healing springs and saunas, traditionally used within this neighborhood since the Ottoman Empire.
