Like "The Lady in The Bay" in New York, The Liberty or Freedom Statue or Freedom Statue dominates the skyline as you look from Pest. She is a sight to behold and well worth the trouble to get up close and personal. It is a monument on the Gellért Hill in Buda and it commemorates those who sacrificed their lives... More

We walked up the hill in the evening, so when we got to the top, we had the most breathtaking view over the city by night!

We visited on a very cold day - the walk to the top (and on the way down!!) were both a bit of a struggle because of the snow and ice, but it was well worth it and all part of the fun. Wear good boots with grip if you decide to go when it's icy. The view from the... More

We visited on a cold winters day early in the morning so it was very quiet. Approximately 20 people in the main Citadel area. I have heard others say that it can get very busy and coaches bring large groups of tourists who don't worry with the steep walk up from the river. You get some great views both up... More

The view from there is beautiful and it seems like the highest spot in Budapest. The walk there is very difficult and it takes time and you definitely need to be in shape for that. There is no public transportation that goes there and it's a shame.

A long hike to the top and a lot of stairs to climb but it is well worth it for the amazing views of Budapest!

If you have seen montparnasse to see a birds eye view of Paris you would know how grand the feeling is of seeing the whole city lit up. Gallert hill is a must trek. It will take 15 min from thr gallert hotel / spa. But once u reach up there the view is worth the hassle.

Rising high above the Danube River on the Buda side of the Danube, the views from this spot are spectacular. Plenty of hiking if you choose to. Driving to the top by the Citadel is an option as well. The statue commemorates Hungary's liberation from Nazi rule. At the top sits the Citadel with the equally impressive Statue of Liberty... More

The climb to this monument isn't that taxing, but for some reason I found it a challenge when I climbed but I'm so glad I made the climb. You get an amazing view over Budapest, and the statue isn't too shabby either!

Staying in Gellert Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
Gellert Hill
If you want to treat your camera to some amazing scenery, Gellért Hill is a must on your itinerary. A funicular journey from the Chain Bridge along the hillsides provides a fast connection between Buda and Pest, hoisting visitors to panoramic vistas. Once on top of the hill, you’ll find the Citadel dominate the landscape with its imposing 19th century construction, a site that’s hard to keep your eyes on without being distracted by the phenomenal view over the Danube and the eight bridges crossing. Once on Gellért Hill however, one mustn’t miss the famous Gellért Baths. Budapest is renown for its thermal waters and its baths, and the Gellért Baths are housed in an impressive art nouveau structure. Its interior design, with its many mosaics, recalls the preceding relationships the city has had with healing springs and saunas, traditionally used within this neighborhood since the Ottoman Empire.
