We went by at mid-day on a pretty day in April and the line was an hour long, so we skipped it. When we came back just before sunset the line was five minutes, so we rode up. The old cars are cool, but the ride itself is very short and the views are constricted by brick walls. The real... More

Best way to get to top of Castle Hill. We went early and there was no line, but later in day it gets crowded. View going up and down is fantastic. You see the river Danube and the Chain bridge as you go up. We went to Parliament and walked around for a bit and took ride down. Great fun.

The Buda Hill funicular takes you from the Buda end of the Chain Bridge to the entrance to the Buda Castle, on top of the hill. It is a relatively short ride (compared to many other funiculars around the world), but it is located in a very historic place in the city =. at the bottom, it sits next to... More

I was quite prepared to spend time queueing to get a ticket for this quirky activity. It wasn't ridiculously expensive either. Views from the top are amazing so "just do it"... you'll enjoy exploring whilst up there too.

You can get to the top of Castle Hill either by foot or by staying on Bus16. But I would suggest that you take the Siklo ( funicular ) for a bit of fun. It will cost approx 6 Euro return but it is worth it as you climb up and see Chain bridge underneath you. Then finally you get... More

The Funicular is a classic trolley type ride straight up to the top of the Buda Palace hill. Yes, of course you can walk, it's not too steep or long, but watching the city unfold as you rise to the top of the hill is a terrific way to start this portion of your Buda tour. Lines to board were... More

Sadly, this was closed for maintenance and we only saw test runs of the cars by the engineers. This was at the top of my to do list in Budapest and we will have to return. On the plus side, we use the little electric shuttle to the top of the hill and we felt this was excellent value.

The lines are REALLY long in the morning and early afternoons. We had walked all over Pest from our hotel in the Castle District and came back across the Chain Bridge around 5:30pm expecting the same long lines, but we walked straight up to the ticket booth and got right on. What a joy for tired feet! The ride is... More

Staying in District I / Buda

Neighbourhood Profile
District I / Buda
The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.
