In front of the monument there are water springs and the kids were fascinated to play at them as it was a hot summer day with 30°C at 7pm! We were walking back home. So we saw the park and it’s playgrounds, the playing water and the statue. As the kids played in the water we took the time to better understand what the suitcases were doing there. When we could read in many different languages the so called fabricated history as well as the real one according to the victims relatives!
It is very impressive what a regime can do and how it can manipulate people through information or misleading information. Worth every second spent reading and observing it all!

The monument strikes you first, but the real story is in the protest propaganda in front of it. Stark and grim reading. The memorabilia is beautiful and heart-wrenching. Again, very hard not to cry at this. Take some time to read the stories and to feel the outrage and the love. As significant as Shoes on the Danube.

A very controversial memorial - near the Szabadsag square - and the controversy is coming from what it is representing.
Now in WWII - for everybody to remember - Hungary was an ally of the Axis and was supporting the Nazi war effort - Hungarian soldiers died in at Stalingrad and all over Russia fighting alongside the German army. Now by 1944 , Admiral Horthy was inclined to side with the Allies an turn against the Germans - hence the SS was sent in (along with the Wehrmacht) to stabilize the situation.
Now that 1944 is written on the ring on one of the feet of the eagle that is descending upon the Archangel holding the orb representing Hungary.
Now the controversy is coming from the fact that on the memorial there is nothing mentioned about the Hungarian Jews who died during the years of Hungarian and German collaboration. Hence - right across the street form the monument there a "counter monument" that is dedicated to the memory of all the Jews who died in the period of WWII.
Overall a controversial monument - and definitely worth a few pics if you are in the area. (Don't forget to make your homework and read a bit in advance about what you see there).

When this "monument"appeared in Liberty square I asked myself:is this a joke? Firstly, the monument itself looks so ugly that I really do not think it can be classified as a piece of art. Very very very ugly. Secondly, it represents yet another attempt operated by Hungarian government authorities to fabricate History. A monument to the German occupation? Wasn't Hungary one of Germany's very loyal allies until almost the end of WW2 ? Please, stop cheating and remove this horror. And nearby dictator Horty's monument too.

The title of the monument itself is an historical inaccuracy. Hungary was an ally of Nazi Germany. The Hungarian army fought with the Axis powers throughout the war. The Hungarian government began passing anti-Jewish laws and ghettoizing its Jews in the 1930's. The only "German invasion" which occurred was in 1944, when the Germans came in and shipped what Jews were still alive off to extermination camps. None of that is reflected in this "memorial." Kudos to the Jews who protested its erection, who have placed their own makeshift memorials on the site, and who continue to protest at the site on a daily basis.

Happy about the decision of the city to place this grand monument that contradicts the history and shows the the truth behind the events that occurred during WWII. Brought an opportunity after more than 70 years to deal with history, as much as happens these days in Poland and Holland. Europe should learn from Germany how to assume the responsibility of their deeds during this dark era and to cope with the shame and regret.

On the face of it a monument to the de facto German takeover of Hungary in 1944 and those that died after this.

During World War II Hungary was closely allied with Germany, especially in the fight against the Soviet Union after Germany’s initial invasion. In 1944 Germany thought that Hungary was endeavouring to agree a peace with the Allies, and so overthrew the Hungarian government and supported a puppet regime. The relatively recently build monument highlights Germany’s actions in 1944 and the subsequent victims.

Critics of the monument have inserted their own memorial suggesting that this monument suggests that that Hungary was a victim of German in World War II, and by implication not responsible for the events after the takeover.

Personally I would recommend a visit as a chance to reflect and an opportunity to think about this historical period, and how different people can see the same facts and come to very different conclusions not least on what from the past should be memorialised.

Down on the edge of Liberty Square(Szabadság tér) is a thought provoking memorial to the Hungarian victims of the Holocaust. The main monument constructed in stone and bronze was erected to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1944 German occupation of Hungary, we were told on our walking tour that the design outraged many Hungarian people. In the foreground of the monument a single lane of traffic passes between it and the collection of everyday items regarding to the victims of the invasion; suitcases, shoes, photographs, letters, etc. Lest we forget.

I give this monument only 1 star for the same reason some people have given it 5 stars. The discussion that has been created by this misfired propaganda exercise is certainly worthwhile. Congratulations to the people who maintain a vigil to this monument every afternoon challenging onlookers to think about history and the deliberate misuse of history by politicians and others.
Anyone visiting Budapest should see this - hopefully one day an enlightened Hungarian government will dismantle it.

First of all, the official monument erected by the Orban government is really bad, stupid almost, because of the quite naive use of portrayed symbolism.
But the biggest problem with it is the revisionism of history, since the monument totally casts aside the fact that Hungary was ally of the Nazi Germany from the start, only to be ''occupied'' in final months of the war, much like the case with Italy for example. But the government nowdays saw this as a great way to put all the blame for done atrocitoes on Germans, which is totally unfair and in a great extent a blatant lie.

Thankfully, there are people who will not let go of the truth and they made a counter memorial in front, with historical facts and pictures which brings light to the whole truth, however inconvinient it may be. And that's why this monument is so important, because truth about the WWII can be seen, unlike in the National museum.

Great location, easy to see. And you really should see it.
After all, there are rumors that government will clear the area of both memorials, apparently the truth from the counter-memorial is to much for someone...
