Tickets to opera are reasonable and can be bought online in advance. Nice local experience. Gown and tux not required. Business casual suffices and is what most locals do

There shouldn't be any trouble with smart casual. You might feel a little underdressed for any late function as people do tend to have nice dresses but is going to be covered with winter clothes anyway ;)

Smart casual would be acceptable - like dress pants and jacket for men and dress for women. No sneakers or jeans.
