Even though it was still winter and the water was not running in the fountain, I found this fountain really beautiful. Its easy to find in the center of the old town square.
Its also known as Roland's statue. It was built by Andreas Lutringer in 1572. It's supposedly said to be representative of one of the towns defenders, a night dressed in armor.
Legend says that Good Friday, he moves in daylight on his pedestal and waves his sword in all four directions, to show the town that it still enjoys his protection. However, it is said that when he does so he can be seen only by a born-and-bred citizen of Bratislava, one with a pure heart who has never harmed anyone. I like this legend.
Its a must see when in the old town.

Located on one side of the town square opposite the town hall. Reportedly built under the command of Maximilian II who was the King of Hungary and the Holy Roman Emperor. He was crowned as King of Hungary in Bratislava or known as Pressburg during his time.

It was winter so there was no water spouting from the fountain or in the pool underneath it.

The Maximilians Fountain, also known as Roland Fountain, is a fountain in the centre of the in the Main Square, in Bratislava Old Town.

It’s a medium sized fountain with a sculpture of Maximilian II, King of Hungary depicted as a knight and wearing medieval armour. The sculpture stands atop a column in the centre of the fountain and on the column are four sculptures of youthful boys spewing out water from their you know what.

The fountain is considered a landmark of the city, but I thought it was a fairly nondescript fountain. Apart from the aforementioned boys and location, the fountain is pretty average.

Maximilian's Fountain is located in the grand Hlavne namestie, it is an imposing sculpture and is well suited to its surroundings. It was completed in 1572 and is the oldest fountain in Bratislava. The fountain was built to commemorate a great fire that occurred during the coronation of King Maximillian II, the fountain also served another purpose in having a good supply of water in case of another fire.

You can find the Maximillion's Fountain in the main square of Bratislava. This statue built in 1572, featuring a 10.5 metre column. At the top of the column there is a statue of a armoured knight known as Roland, a legendary character believed to protect the city. As such, the statue is also referred to by some to be the Roland's statue.

You can sit on the bench, sharing space with the Napoleon's Army Soldier statue and look at the fountain, its worthing reading up on the legend as well, which is quite interesting and somewhat quirky like much of what you find in the city center of Bratislava.

Like most fountains in Central Europe, we found the Maximilian's Fountain emptied of water during the time of our visit in March. However, it seemed like a nice contribution of the main square, something that would be nice to see during the warmer months of the year when in operation.

If you said the Roland Fountain ((sometimes referred to as Maximilian Fountain), then you were correct. The fountain is located in the Main Square of Old Town. The original purpose of the fountain was to provide the city with a public water supply. In 1572, Maximilian II ordered its construction. The fountain is topped by a statue of Maximilian shown as a knight in full armor. The Knight represents Roland, the defender of municipal rights. At the foot of the statue on each side is the coat of arms of Bratislava. It can’t be missed since it is in the main square (Hlavné námestie).

Worth a walk in the old inner city to reach this monument. A Good click for a selfie. Depicts the fondness for art in people of that era. Nice surroundings to roam as well.
