- LothsePoland516 contributionsNice to seeProbably it is a case of terrible weather, but I can’t say Kłajpeda is a charming or charismatic place. Old Town is not in best shape, quite strange and empty. Good to Pop in and see this great sea city, but I think there are much nicer places to stay overnight.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten April 22, 2024
- JB81ontheroadHalifax, Canada437 contributionsEnjoy a stroll along the canalKlaipeda is the only port city in Lithuania big enough to host cruise ships (and pretty much the only port city, period). So, if your cruise is stopping in Lithuania, it's definitely stopping in Klaipeda. And if you're getting off the ship, you're pretty much right in the middle of Old City. It's definitely not an exciting place, but the canal area in particular is quite picturesque and is an enjoyable area to walk around - especially to try and track down some of the many public statues.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 22, 2024
- Joan BHamilton, Ohio209 contributionsA beautiful and very walkable town.Even though the weather was really rainy, we enjoyed Klaipeda very much. The old town was very walkable from our cruise ship and had lots of shops and restaurants along the streets. At the end of the Main Street (Teague) is a large park with an amphitheater and waterfalls for city gatherings. In good weather it is probably an enjoyable area. Also, on the other side of the river is another beautiful park where there were some interesting historical monuments about the battle for Klaipeda. There was a little tourist train running up and down the Main Street that looked like fun too.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten September 30, 2024

Klaipėda's main attractions are the historic buildings in the city's centre, dating from the 13th to 18th centuries. Some of its older buildings have picturesque half-timbered construction, similar to that found in Germany. Some of the other historic attractions are the remnants of the Klaipėda Castle, built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order, The maritime museum in Fort Wilhelm and of course the Klaipėda Drama Theatre. The town has many museums including the Amber Museum and the Clocks Museum. The real charm though is the laid back atmosphere and the surrounding architecture.
One of most popular places in Klaipėda's old town is The Theatre Square. hosts a variety of concerts, the Sea Festival, the International Jazz Festival and other events. An important focus of the Theatre Square is the Taravos Anikė sculpture depicting a youthful barefoot girl. The sculpture was erected in the memory of the poet Simonas Dachas and perpetuates one of the poet's described heroes. Here, most days you will find a market selling local tourist products, specialising in Amber.

we chose Klaipeda as our overnight destination because of the Curonian Spit. We were disappointed, the old town was only partially restored, a lot of Soviet style remained. It's better to take the ferry directly to the island and stay overnight in Nida.
North of Klaipeda there are beautiful stretches of beach, e.g. Olanda

Sort of cute, but seen in no time.
After visiting Tallinn and Vilnius it takes a bit more to impress us. Klaipeda is of course a much smaller city, but the old town is still nice for a stroll.

Without doubt, very intriguing and full of little surprises!
This is our second visit to Klaipeda having explored the Old Town on a number of separate occasions, yet on our last visit we still managed to discover intriguing little passageways littered with craft shops which we failed to seek out on our previous visit.
To all Trip Advisors, the Old Town is well worth a visit and I can highly recommend the Friedrich Passageway, which is full of bars and eating houses especially if you are looking for something alfresco.
If you find this review helpful together with my other reviews about Lithuania then please leave a ‘Helpful Vote’.

We arrived here by cruise ship and strolled into the town. It's an easy walk from the ship. Lots of cafes and bars to choose from most have free wifi.

If you have a spare hour or so, don’t miss out on visiting the Old City of Klaipeda. Only a short walk from the famous international port of Klaipeda, the streets are littered with beautiful architecture, shops, coffee bars and if you look hard enough, even an Irish pub that sells Guinness!!
It is bordered by the Arkmena-Dane Canal, which houses the ‘Meridianas Boat’, which now has a permanent mooring and is used as a restaurant.
To all Trip Advisors, you will not be disappointed.

Pick up a Klaipeda Sculpture Lovers Map from the tourism office and experience this ancient city while looking for the sculptures! It made my day and I could not wait to discover the next sculpture 💚 The photos are just some of those I photographed!

Hello---how far do you need to walk from the port to the old town? We are coming in on Oceania marina in August 2019 and don't know where this ship will dock. Thank you.
Written February 14, 2019
It is about 850 meters (0,5 miles).

Man kann Klaipeda selbst erkunden. Man benötigt keine Gruppenführung. In der Touristinfo gibt es ausführliches, kostenloses Material!

Will be there Aug 13 from the Nautica from 8-4. Is there something special happening that day? Or should we just walk the old town?
Is there a hop on and off bus service?
Thanks
Written July 6, 2015
Hi! No hop-on-hop-off-bus necessary in Klaipeda as the Old City is very compact and lovely to walk around. Please check the official homepage of Klaipeda City for any special events and do not miss the visit to their Sea Museum (Marine Museum) and the Curonian Spit, just google their homepages as tripadvisor does not allow to write the webside links there in the answer. Good luck and sekmes!
