The Vilna Castle complex, located at the foot of Castle Hill, once included the Palace of the Rulers, St. Stanislaus Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace, the Tribunal building and the Arsenal. The Grand Duke's Palace was finally lost at the beginning of the 19th century, when it had been in ruins for 150 years. It was erected on the site of the Lower Castle that existed here since ancient times under the Grand Duke Vitovt. The current building was rebuilt at the beginning of the 21st century. It houses the National Museum of Lithuania.

Excellent museum and so pleased I visited as it was a spur of the moment decision. Brilliant restoration work throughout and some really interesting permanent and temporary exhibits. Will visit again next time I'm in Vilnius!

The museum is great, lots to see and more interesting than it appears from the outside. Well worth a visit.

even tho it's been rebuilt quite recently it give all you need from the main museum in the town! It's quite modern, unlike most of museums in this part of Europe.
