A leisured stroll through the historical courtyards of Vilnius University is an excellent way to spend a morning in Vilnius Old Town. Enter from the gate next to Church of St. Johns and you'll meet a tour guide welcoming you in. Ask them about the frescoes indoors, which are a must-see and could easily be missed without knowing where to find them. The cafeteria was closed for summer and the bookstore for renovation.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed visiting Vilnius University. Founded in 1579, the university was run by Jesuits for 200 years. It was recognized as one of Europe's greatest places for education during the 19th century. It was shutdown by Tsar Nicholas and closed by the Nazis, but yet survived. It has an amazing cluster of spectacular architecture. A baroque church, beautiful courtyard and hall laden with frescos, and a bell tower, all of which are open to visitors. It also houses Lithuania's oldest library. Truly worthwhile to visit when in Vilnius.

I can’t say I was overly impressed by this university at all. It has a rather sterile feel to it. In the whole time I wandered about the grounds and courtyards, I saw only one student. Even the Church of St. Johns looks as if it has a cardboard façade. Certainly not a ‘must see’.

I've been to every country in Europe. I have seen Cambridge and I have seen Bologna but the essence of this University is unrivaled in terms of character. Its architecture, its history, and its spirit are a marvel mixture that demand the greatest honor and praise. Highly recommend a visit. I don't know if it's that Lithuania was one of the best experiences I've ever had in Europe or that my kids are dying to go back because they miss the place so goddam much but this place was very monumental to me and definitely worth the visit.

The university is right by the presidential palace. It’s an old looking place which I liked. It seemed rather empty so it might have been a time between semesters. I thought it looked like a cool place to learn.

It’s a Euro 3 entrance to the University complex and a Euro 1.50 for the bell tower. St Johns Church was in full wedding hosting mode on a Saturday afternoon; although the church was inaccessible due to wedding ceremonies, it was good for a bit people watching. The wedding festivities unleashed some country dancing and folk music on the unsuspecting. The Littera frescoes are also closed for reconstruction. The courtyards themselves are fairly unremarkable.
The frescoes in the Philological faculty has some pretty crazy looking subject matter. These are contemporary; painted in the 1970s and 1980s. The subject matter are on ethnographic and mythological themes. The results are surreal, weird and a little uncanny.

You should visit the vilnius iniversity. One of the oldest universitites in Europe(16th century) maintain the old character and combines it with the modern art. The building is full of history. The gardens and the yard are amazing

You might not consider a university campus as a sightseeing attraction -- this one is an exception and is definitely worthwhile. The original campus of Vilnius University dates to 1579. It is a very attractive campus with many beautiful buildings. The 2 most impressive stops are St. John's Church and the University Bookstore with beautiful artwork on all walls & ceiling.

So often overlooked this university campus is not to be missed.
The wall frescoes of Lithuanian folklore are spectacular. The whole architecture is beautiful across the 13 courtyards are beautiful.
The university church is splendid with baroque rococo style and 2 fresco that survived soviet occupation.
The university bookshop also has a good selection of Lithuanian literature including fairytales and folklore in several languages and other souvenirs different from the usual tourist tatt.

Visiting Vilnius we had university on your list to see. It was a short walk from the main plaza through the old town. University has a small entry fee which is worth paying. According to guide it is one of the oldest in Eastern Europe. I was looking forward to show it to my son. You will not see it in North America. I will not describe the cord yards and what you see inside. The church will impress you for sure, it is one of the oldest ones in Lithuania and is about 700 years old, if I am not wrong. Right beside the church is the bell tower. The entry there is separate fee. Do it. It has an elevator build in. But we have climbed stairs. It did not took long, dare yourself to follow our example. The view from the top is spectacular. I liked it even more then on Gedimino Tower. Plan to spend about 1.5 hours for it all.

I think to go and see it is free. If you will go and see the observatory tower you will pay a few euros. Just be sure to have printed out some guided instructions, as it has some very beautiful hidden places like the department of the Lituanistics and so on.
