Toomemagi or Toome Hill was a gift from Emperor Paul I to the University of Tartu – having previously been used by townsfolk to graze cattle. For hundreds of years it had been the centre point of the local population, later becoming the site of a castle which made it the heart of medieval Tartu. In the early decades of the 19th century it was turned into a park on the initiative of the university's plantation committee, with alleys of trees, paved roads and bridged gulleys. Along with the library, anatomicum, observatory and clinic it formed the intellectual focal point of Tartu.

Nice walks in historical surroundings

Toome Hill is one of "the must" places in Tartu. Good for walks and jogging, romantic meetings or just excercising your dog.

Nice little walk from the Town hall; Beautiful park and ruins of a huge church. In the Summer you can also climb up to the tower to see the whole Tartu.

The hill suits all types of tourists. It is 1 min walk from Town Hall Square. It is good for a nice afternoon walk, running, cycling, and going on a pick-nick. It has the devil and angel bridges. It gives a nice view of the town. Excellent for taking photos.

One can follow the walking tour and see all the statues and the UNESCO observatory and the old cathedral ruins. But, the views are the best.

A favourite part of Tartu to walk when visiting. Love the history, the views, and the architecture. I particularly like the old cathedral and the tour to the top is worth admission!
