Impressive but pretty bare inside, Christmas Market very very small
Inevitably under Soviets, two world wars and reformation has been knocked about a bit and is pretty bare inside except magnificent organ and pulpit. However is huge impressive brick gothic church and very beautiful outside . Christmas market held in square next to us nice but very small.

    Amazing historical cathedral
Amazing piccolo organ concert at the Riga Cathedral. I also didn't know that they have very pretty yard inside looks like some cathedral in Italy. I highly recommend to visit this place as a tourist. I was born in Riga but never been inside the yard. Also organ is one of the most historical in Europe & World.

    Nice surprise concert
Lovely gilded red brick building in a sunlit open square, which also contains Latvian Radio, and the Stock Exchange, plus interesting public art, and children's play area. Lutheran Cathedral and relatively plain interior, except for beautiful pulpit, and the most amazing organ case. I was lucky enough to be there for a lunchtime organ concert on the superb 4-manual instrument. Nice peaceful cloister at the back of the Cathedral.

Certainly Worth a Visit When Touring the Old Town: See and Hear the Organ
Riga Cathedral is a site in its own right, but I think it is better seen as a part of touring Riga's fun and beautiful old town. It is steps away from other notable structures and I would include it as part of a walking tour or exploration of the old town, along with the many other attractions that include the House of the Blackheads, the Occupation Museum, the cat house, and several other churches. In any case, Riga Cathedral is hard to miss in central Riga. We visited twice, once to view the building and the other to hear the magnificent organ. At least during the time we were in Riga, they had daily 20-minute organ concerts with a noted organist at noon. They are short, lasting only 20 minutes or so and cost 10€. It’s well worth it. Even if you don't stay for the music, take a look at it at the back of the church as it is large and attractive. The church interior is not particularly ornate, but it is attractive. You should also take a walk around the cloisters. Many churches in Riga have roosters on their spires rather than crosses. From outside, they look roughly life-size, but they have one of the originals on display here, and it is more like 4 or 5 feet tall. The use of roosters may have been a pagan throwback. One side is painted black and the other gold so that merchants would know which way the wind was blowing (and the likely level of shipping commerce that day). Walk around outside. There are whimsical statues of a dragon, a horse, and an armadillo. Our advice would be to explore the old town, but time your visit so you can enjoy the organ concert.

    Wonderful visit to Riga Cathedral
Wonderful visit to Riga Cathedral. €5 entrance fee and well worth it. Arrive just before 12pm to be treated to an impressive 20 m performance on one of the largest pipe organs in the world.

    The organ is worth seeing
Unfortunately we weren’t able to visit at the time of one of the daily concerts (3pm) but the organ is well worth seeing anyway. Otherwise the exterior of this cathedral largely impresses more than the plain interior, with the exception being the large, ornately carved pulpit and the attractive stained glass windows. The cloisters are an added feature but are pretty standard for these things.

    Majestic Cathedral
This is the Cathedral Church of St Mary and is the Evangelical Lutheran seat of the Archbishop of Riga. It is known as the Dome Cathedral and was built in 1211. It is the largest medieval church in the Baltic states. During Soviet occupation it was used as a concert hall as religious services were not allowed. It has been restored since and reopened for services in 1991. Unfortunately we did not have time to view inside.

    Not the most impressive Cathedral
As Cathedrals go this one is rather spare. Apart from the impressive organ, the pulpit and a carved wooden Blackheads structure, there isn't much to see. I'm not sure it's worth the €5 Euro entrance. Although you could see it by going to an organ concert.

Riga's cathedral was somewhat underwhelming in comparison to the more impressive St. Peter's church.
Having said that, the imposing building and the square are worth a visit.

Other than the organ and solidarity with ukraine posters there was little to indicate this was still home uo a worshipping community. Suggest admin compare their tourist literature with the Lutheran cathedral in Visby, which was in contrast so welcoming.
The cloisters were noce, but otherwise it feels as if the Russian occupation still impacts the spiritual ilpact of this building despite 30 yrs of independance.

Riga Cathedral, with its Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque influences, is a beautiful example of an evolving monument and an emblem of Latvia's capital city.

Services are still held in Riga Cathedral, and the building stands as an imposing presence in the historic district of Riga, an area designated a UNESCO Workd Heritage Site.
