The church itself is quite ordinary, and at the time of my visit undergoing large scale renovation. Though it is surely worth some time. It is an Evangelical Lutheran Cathedral built in three different architectural, Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque. Started in the early 14th century, it is the largest basilica in the Baltic. I found the cloister to be much... More

Standing in the middle of the Old town, in a big Dome Square this Church dates back to 13th cent when built by the city founder Bishop Albert (after him is called the famous Art Nouveau street). Of course, it was rebuilt several times through centuries to gain it's today appearance. It is famous for two things. First is a... More

Beautiful building on the exterior and we were interested to see it inside, but it was sadly disappointing. The entrance fee was 3 Euros each and therefore we expected something of interest. The interior was dark and there was scaffolding up, the cloisters were closed, there was no information leaflet or signs etc, so we felt we had wasted our... More

It's a wonderful cathedral with some gorgeous stained glass but the highlight was the walk around the cloisters where many old artifacts are displayed. No crowds at all a very tranquil and interesting place.

Beautiful place of worship, but the organ facade is currently undergoing some major refurbishment so if that is your reason for coming then I'd wait until it was finished.

The cathedral is an amazing dome in the center of Riga old town. The biggest one in the Baltic states. It has a very elegant and grandiose look, basically rules the center. If you are in Riga you cannot miss this one!

This story is about the Evangelical Lutheran cathedral of Riga - one of the most recognizable landmarks in Latvia, featured in paintings, photographs and television travelogues. The church, built near the River Daugava in 1211 by Livonian Bishop Albert of Riga (from Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany), is considered the largest medieval church in the Baltic states known for its... This was a fascinating Cathedral to visit. The cloisters were a mini museum of the city as well as the cathedral. There is obviously a lot of renovations taking place and when we visited the entire organ was covered in scaffolding.
