The story behind this unique architecture tells of its Latvian owner who was denied membership in the powerful Great Guild; to show his displeasure, he built two cat sculptures on his roof with their backsides facing the Guild and their tails straight up to finish the insult.

A really interesting building, of course the best part is the cat statue on the top, be sure to look up, but the best part is the story that hides behind the whole cat thing.

The palace, of a yellow color, rises in the center of old town; this should be the only reason to be seen! It seems he was builded for the "whim" of a wealthy trader, who was denied being a member of the Chamber of Commerce....More

Not as stylised as some of the art nouveau rea buildings in Riga but a nice building nonetheless with captivating cat details!

The interesting part of the Cat House is the exterior, namely the two cat sculptures on the roof. Easily unnoticed if you don't know about their existence, easily spotted if you know.

It's what is says on the tin, a cat house. There are two cats on the roof of a mustard coloured building in the city centre. A brief story explains the reason... nothing more, nothing less! Swing by and take a look, but I don't...More

I passed by it several ttimes, always looking up at the funny, ironic cats that have transformed in real landmarks - you will find tons of merchandising in the souvenir shops with the black cat.

You will soon notice a lot of the available magnets have a black cat on them - at first I didn't understand why. I have since learned this black cat is a symbol of the city. It has a great back story to it too....More

Better to mark it down first cuz it took me a while to find this place. And in fact, there are two black cats, each on a corner of the building. You can see the black cats in all kinds of souvenir stores.

This striking custard yellow building is famous for its distinctive black cat figure arching its back on its turret. Who doesn't love a quirky statue? But the story behind what the cat is doing up there is even quirkier. In the early 20th century a...More
