- ElissaLos Angeles, California595 contributionsAmazing, Well Organized MuseumThe Trakai Island Museum is amazing! The exhibit is so well organized and it's seriously impressive how much they've excavated from the castle. If you want to take pictures inside, you'll have to pay a few extra euro at the ticket counter.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 24, 2023
- Julie CKent, United Kingdom666 contributionsBeautiful surroundingsFirst of all, it is easy to get to on public transport. We got the train from Vilnius then chose to walk to through Trakai to it and back on the lake path. The castle looks beautiful on the island surrounded by the lake, and when we went the lake was frozen making it look even more magical. There were many rooms open with displays and artefacts and history, and you could just wander at your own pace. It is definitely worth a visit, followed by walking round the outside, but be aware that the disabled lift might not be working (it wasn’t when we went), even if the lift is working it only takes you to one bit of the castle and you miss the rest so it isn’t disabled friendly. Also, I don’t understand why you need to buy a photo pass - it isn’t a lot of money, but just seems pointless and a way of making extra money.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 15, 2024
- Deepali45 contributionsMost photogenic location near VilniusThis is a must do trip from Vilnius. The whole romantic castle, the lake and the walk was beautiful. The inside museum is a small museum but the location is brilliant. It is one of the best photogenic location near Vilnius. The trip from Vilnius was very comfortable and it is worth taking half a day or more for this.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten March 31, 2024
- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada8,617 contributionsInteresting Castle in Picturesque SettingThe castle is set on an island in the middle of a lake in the town of Traikai and is located about an hour outside of Vilnius. Seeing the castle on the lake was worth the drive but going in was very cool. The castle has been restored to its former glory and is now home to a museum full of artifacts from the last few centuries. They have a good collection of tobacco pipes, coins, ivory and other valuable items of the time. There are a few rooms set up for dining, bedding and day to day life. There is signage around to indicate which rooms are open to visitors but there are many doors. We checked one door that was closed and we found a cutout of Putin in a prisoners outfit down a well in the "prison". The main tower is currently undergoing restoration so there is scaffolding around to help and there are temporary stairs. There was a decent amount of stairs and no elevator in the area except to get up to the entrance of the main tower. The courtyard has some medieval torture devices that visitors can interact with, has a gift shop in the corner and some very large bathrooms with lots of toilets and urinals. There is paid parking in the town near the island but we couldn't find free parking when we visited. Parking was 2.5 euros an hour and we needed a couple of hours to see everything in the castle. Entrance ticket for adults is 10 euros and we felt it was worth the Day trip from Vilnius.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten April 13, 2024
- tikicici2Florida251 contributionsCastle located on a nice tourist town w/many things to do and eat.The castle is located on a beautiful lake. to get to the castle an entrance ticket is required. Pictures can be taken at the inside w/o a ticket. entrance fee is 9eu. its a good place to spend like 4hs. there are boat for rental and boat that will take you around the lake. also pedal boats that are very nice. the place is important b/c the Traika (Karaites) ethnic group , that migrated from North Turkey. they embraces the old testament and Islam element. there are only 1600 Karaites in the world and 500 live in Israel. Kybynlar (1405) arrive to Lithuania and there are houses with the traditional (3) front windows beside the traditional museum. for lunch i recommend traky-kibinai and enjoy a traditional turnover (kibinai) of chicken, vegetables, lamb , cheese, potatoes. Price starting at 3.50-14 eu.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 5, 2024
- Scott AMontreal, Canada6 contributionsWorth a day tripThis is definitely worth the day trip. Something to walk around, the town is cozy, the castle is nice to walk around in. I didn't have any expectations, but it was definitely much nicer than I imagined and it was full of history.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten July 5, 2024
- liucy752Taipei, Taiwan1,654 contributionsStunning SceneryAfter visiting the Malbork Castle in Poland, I was fascinated by the red castles built of bricks. There are many stunning red brick castles along the Baltic Sea coast, and the Trakai Island Castle should be the most beautiful one. The castle was originally built in the 14th century. It underwent several expansions, reaching its maximum scale in the 15th century. In 17th century the castle was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair. Major reconstructions were carried out in 1950s. The castle was reconstructed based on its 15th century layout. Inside the castle, there is a museum displays history of the Castle, various archaeological findings and a collection of art. Although Trakai Castle is not as big as Malbok Castle, it is as beautiful as it is. Red castle, green trees and blue sky, with the reflections in the water....... What an amazing scenery.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 25, 2024

This is a picture perfect little town with a fairytale inspired castle. Pictures do not do the site justice and it is pretty open to wander around in (including explore the rooms and chapel of the inner castle, crossing a draw bridge and wandering around what wold have been the main square).
Don't rush this one, take your time to see it.
Warning: the last Sunday of the month access is free so the whole town can be a total zoo. Parking will be hard to find and lines for the restaurant can be long.

A very pretty lake with an island castle. You could get to the island by walking on a bridge or rent a boat that takes you around the lake before you land on the back side of the small island. Once on the island you may visit the castle ( there is an entrance fee) which includes a small church. Of course, the all important souvenir stalls by the shore and a small cafe serving whole fried apples, Lithuanian style.

Had been looking forward to visiting hers since we booked our Christmas Market trip.
Access is easy by bus or train to Trakai then a lovely walk either through the town or by the lakeside takes you to the castle.
The location is stunning, the setting a treat for cameras. On our visit the castle was decorated for Christmas and looked even more spectacular with some light snow but no doubt a summer visit would bring its own rewards too.
Guided tours or self tours can be done and much is in English so easy to navigate and understand, a few climbs and staircases get you to all the displays and exhibitions and also the gift shop.
Doesn't take to long to see it all but a walk ot maybe boat trip on the lake will add to the experience, some good local restaurants too serving local food on the lake bank

In terms of appreciation of sheer beauty, it’s almost impossible to separate the Castle of Trakai Island from its forested surroundings or, for that matter, from the little town of Trakai. They are all part of the Trakai Historical National Park, which is on the tentative list for inclusion in the World Heritage List.
The 14th-century castle stands on an island in Lake Galvė, one of the deepest lakes in Lithuania. The castle once served as the residence of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. Now, it houses an historical museum.
The Castle of Trakai Island is, of course, what garners all the kudos, and well deserved they are. However, the surroundings can be utterly breathtaking in autumn!
From the Trakai bus station, the castle is about 2.6 Km away on foot, but it hardly seems that far because the forested pathway around the lake presents an ever-changing landscape.
Getting there from Vilnius:
I chose bus, as it was most convenient.
From Vilnius main bus station - platform 6; times are listed above the platform.
Trip takes about 40 minutes.
From the Trakai Bus Station to the Island Castle ~ 2.6 km
Route can be either straight through Trakai or along the forested path skirting the lake. (I chose the latter because of the stunning scenery.)
Bus Fare: €3.50 (as of 20 October 2022)
I also chose a Thursday simply because I couldn’t get consistent info as the when the castle was actually open. Thursday seemed a safe bet, and it was.

So, Trakai is definitely worth visiting. It is just 40 minute away by bus from Vilnius and the ticket cost me 2 euro. However you must walk about 30 minutes from the bus station to the castle. Be prepared. I did not think the inside of the castle is worth it. I paid 4 euro as a student, for an adult it would be 8 euro and this is simply too much for just a few rooms with old porcelain. My recommendation is to just visit it from outside and enjoy the views by the lake. Have fun.

The castle is beautifully located, and the 2.5 km walk from the train station to the castle alongside the lake is very pleasant. However, the inside of the castle (entrance fee: 12 euros) is terribly disappointing, with semi-random selections of objects, mediocre displays and poor explanations.
Note that the trains between Vilnius and Trakai are low frequency.

This was the most beautiful and peaceful place in Lithuania we visited during our short stay.
You can reach Trakai city by bus from Vilnius which is just 5/7 euro and then you need to walk around 1 km. to reach the lake and witness heaven but it worth for sure. You should walk throughout beautiful green park where you can stop for coffee, ice cream , boating or even swinging 😀😄😂.
We took boat tour , which vary from 5- ? Euro depending what you prefer.

Really enjoyed both the 35 minute, €2 euro bus ride from Vilnius and the walk from Trakai bus station to the castle. Once at the castle was hit with the beauty of this historical wonder. Very nicely restored into a museum with lots of history to read aswell as artifacts from different eras of its life as the Island Castle of Trakai. €8 per adult €1.50 to take photographs. Stopped for lunch at local friendly restaurant for a coffee and a pasty. Whole journey with lunch less than €50 with return journey to Vilnius.

What a castle. What an area. Everything about this place is breathtaking.
It is about 2.5km from the bus station and you wouldn't feel the walk because of the scenery and the town itself. It felt like stepping back in time.
It was certainly the highlight of the trip to Lithuania for me.
You would definitely spend at least a few hours here and the museum has a lot to offer and is great value also and everything is in Lithuanian and English so it should appeal to many.
If you are into photography this castle will provide you with great opportunities.
We were so lucky that the weather was dry as it enhanced the experience for us both.

The most beautiful castle in a stunning location in the middle of a few lakes. Take note that it’s not open on Mondays but that didn’t stop walking around the perimeter and visiting Trakai was well worth the visit.
We got a taxi there which cost €40 Between 4 and then the bus back to Vilnius which cost €2 per person. We were staying at the Vilnius Grand Resort who ran a free shuttle bus back to hotel.
Plenty of cafes, bars and souvenir shops too.

Bonjour
Pouvez vous me dire s’il est facile de louer des vélos et comme nous arriverons à la gare routière s’il y a un loueur proche
Merci
Written May 11, 2019

Written August 21, 2018
I wouldn't wait for Sunset in trakai. It's much nicer during the day where you can enjoy the castle as well as paddle boarding or a boat ride on the lake around the castle which is highly recommended. Anyway the sun doesn't set till very late during the summer there. Hope this helps
