About Banks Track
NZ’s original private walking track is an excellent eco-tourism experience, offering diverse wildlife, scenery and hospitality. Each accommodation reflects the character, history and individuality of the track families. Two self-guided options offer you the comfort of hot showers and small numbers, combined with the independence of the freedom walker. A Kiwi favourite.

I don't know why I've waited 20 years to go on this beautiful track on our doorstep, with treasures such as old red beech forests, beautiful cliffs and coastlines, penguins and seals, kayaking and cute huts. I want to go again soon!

We loved this! Wonderful views, well sign-posted track and excellent accommodations - all quite different but clean and cosy. Loved them all but the Stoney Bay room was delightful. The track takes you through some varied landscape, the cliff walks and beech forest being a highlight. Having your pack portered on and waiting for you is very cool - the DOC walks will feel a bit like slumming it now :) Take along a little cash for cold beers at Flea Bay and Stoney Bay - very welcome after a tramp. Highly recommended - thanks to all the families involved in putting this kiwi treasure together.

I absolutely loved this walk and am extremely grateful to the families that have made it happen. Opening the track allowed them to diversify their farming income but it also opened a beautiful corner of the country to walkers. The diversity of walking and climbing is the foundation of the walk but the accommodation is an integral part of the appeal. I loved it all from the stargazers huts, to the original farming cottage to the purpose built village of sustainable cabins. The walking and ascent is substantial but the rewards are worth every moment of effort.

Fantastic 3 days on the track. The scenery was breath taking. The huts were some of the best we have stayed in - very quaint. Loved the fact there were fresh supplies and beer at Stoney Bay. Didn't have to carry too much. Was my second time on the track. Will definitely be back.

What an amazing walk - such great variety from farmland to coastal to beautiful beech forest. A good level of activity on each of the three days and lovely cosy and quirky accommodation each night. Highly recommended!
