Successful Revegetation

As a regular visitor to Hinewai, I love to see the remarkable evidence of regeneration of the native forest cover of Banks Peninsula after nearly 200 years of destruction.

A beautiful piece of land that was allowed, obviously with some help,to return to its original state. A lot of native trees and shrubs were replanted and it has some very nice walks, some quite steep. Take an hour or two to explore this place, or longer. Entrance is free.

Really lovely walking tracks. Everything is well signposted and there are informative signs along the tracks. We went when there was some low cloud. We ended up so high we were fully clouded over. Definitely visit in fine weather for those picture perfect views. Bring a jacket as it was windy and foggy and conditions can change fast.

Hinewai Reserve is the result of the vision of the extraordinary (yet humble) botanist Hugh Wilson who has nursed this old area of farmland back to a diverse botanical treasure. Explore the many tracks that Hugh and his team have built here and enjoy the diverse fauna and flora. There is even the option of hiring the Hinewai Lodge to... More

This is a short but steep drive out of Akaroa ,but great to see care in restoring this hill area overlooking the harbour. Take a picnic,a back pack or just stroll. It is back to the past.

This was a spur of the moment decision to walk here, and I'm so glad I did. Absolutely beautiful. It was so amazing to have such beautiful well maintained walking tracks all to myself at peak tourist time. The park manager, Hugh, is an absolute gem! Highly recommend trying out some of the trails.

We walked (as part of the Banks Peninsula track) from Stony Bay to Akaroa (via the saddle) and this involved walking for a couple of hours through the Hinewai reserve. The paths within the reserve are very well marked - including side paths to waterfalls and view points. Our path also crossed a pure spring water stream - where a... More

Amazing project undertaken by the landowners. We didn't have that long so we did a circuit of the waterfalls (east then south then west track). It had rained that morning so track was quite slippery (plenty of warnings about this) and I wished I'd worn sneakers. Was also quite steep (also signposted) so if you are very unfit or have...
