Full-day Akaroa Tour with Penguins Safari and Wine Tasting

1 review
Take time out to connect with nature and delight in a nature safari encompassing the wild penguins at Flea Bay. How peaceful is that! To complete your day, enjoy an end-of-day wine tasting (or non-alcoholic beverage) and afternoon platter at the very special French Peak vineyard.. Your journey to Akaroa takes in the stunning scenery of the rugged Banks Peninsula coastline and farmlands. Stopovers include the award winning Barrys Bay Cheese factory at Duvauchelle, and the quaint Little River Café & Gallery. You can also enjoy wandering around the French-inspired township of Akaroa (during the day, you will have a little over 3 hours spare time to wander in and around at your own pace).

A geocache brought me to this spot, late in the afternoon. It was lovely to meet the creator and custodian of many of the flora, Hugh, and chat to him.

Had the pleasure of talking with Paul from the team looking after the reserve. The work they have all put in just shows that there are awesome hardworking kiwis who love our land and want the best for it and for the native wildlife too.

The day started where we planned on one of the shorter walks, however, the lady in the I centre suggested this walk. At the end of the day it was a total of 14Km, 610m altitude and 4 and a 1/2 hours. We are both in our early to mid 60's and exercise daily, running, swimming and walking a lot, so are very fit. This walk took both of us to our absolute limit. The walk starts off at the end of town and works its way up to the Heritage park. From there it drops a little before striking upwards and seems to go on forever. The other side of the summit there is a picnic spot with toilet. From here it climbs back up and then works its way down to town. The reward is one of the most exhilarating views ever plus a sense of achievement.

I had the most amazing walk through Hinewai. What they have accomplished there in term of restoration of native forest is amazing! It is on a hill so you do need some fitness, but it well worth the energy to explore this amazing place.
