The day started where we planned on one of the shorter walks, however, the lady in the I centre suggested this walk. At the end of the day it was a total of 14Km, 610m altitude and 4 and a 1/2 hours. We are both in our early to mid 60's and exercise daily, running, swimming and walking a lot, so are very fit. This walk took both of us to our absolute limit. The walk starts off at the end of town and works its way up to the Heritage park. From there it drops a little before striking upwards and seems to go on forever. The other side of the summit there is a picnic spot with toilet. From here it climbs back up and then works its way down to town. The reward is one of the most exhilarating views ever plus a sense of achievement.…

I had the most amazing walk through Hinewai. What they have accomplished there in term of restoration of native forest is amazing! It is on a hill so you do need some fitness, but it well worth the energy to explore this amazing place.
