We drove the Richardson Highway from Fairbanks to Valdez in two days - stopped off at Paxson (Tangle River Inn) overnight. The section from Fairbanks to Delta Junction was unimpressive, although there is a good view of Eielson Air Force Base and a few lakes and views of the Tanana River crossings. We stopped at North Pole for gas but... More

Beautiful scenic highway offering vistas, salmon viewing and glimpses of the Alaskan pipeline. Easy drive.

We drove Richardson Highway from Fairbanks to Valdez in one long day (365 miles). The section from Fairbanks to Delta Junction was unimpressive, although there is a good view of Eielson Air Force Base and a few lakes and views of the Tanana River crossings. We did not stop at North Pole as it's not the sort of tourist attraction... More

We drove from Fairbanks to Glennallen and this stretch of drive was not as spectacular as I expected. We got a gloomy day so it might have bad effects on the view. Before reaching Delta Junction, there was nothing special. We stopped at Santa Clause House and that was nice. This gift shop gave you the feeling of year round... More

Drove from Anchorage to Fairbanks this week via the Richardson Highway. Breathtaking views and moose sightings abound. Stopped to take many pictures so the drive took all day but that was our plan. Highly recommend.

We were lucky as the weather was fantastic! We saw moose, caribou, eagles and lots more. The mountains are just stunning and the highway is very good. This is a must (as is the Denali Highway) if you visit Alaska. Simply superb!

First off, if you're spending any time at all on Alaska's Highways, buy a copy of the Milepost. Spend time figuring out how to use it before you go. Also, you can highlight places of interest. This is invaluable on a road like the Richardson Highway. We learned so much. Unfortunately, we only got on at Glen Allen and stayed... More

we took the Richardson from Glennallen to Valdez and it's very pretty and interesting. Be sure to stop at the Wrangell-St. Elias Park visitor Center, MP!)^>*. Beautiful views from short walk behind center, good film on the area and clean restrooms. Best of all, Ahtna Cultural Center is very interesting and the young woman working there was very informative.

Travelled from Fairbanks to Valdez with an overnight stop at Tangle Lakes Inn. Beautiful scenery at all turns and glimpses of the Alaska Pipeline. As the road climbed to Thompson Pass the clouds rolled in, and visibility decreased to zero, plus driving rain. A touch scary. On a practical note, make use of any toilets you see - there are... This was our second trip on the Richardson. We drove from Fairbanks to Glennallen on one day and Glennallen to Valdez another. We saw some things that we remembered and a lot that we missed the first time. The weather was clear so we even had a view of Mt. McKinley for a while! The vastness of Alaska is very... More
