Until 2006 this southern California canyon oasis property was a commercial trout farm and hatchery. It was added to Wilderness Preserve properties. The volume of water and oasis potential are matched only by the Agua Caliente Tribe's Palm Canyon Preserve. The vegetation in the Whitewater preserve is more mountain riparian. It is a natural treasure.

An out of town guest coupled with the recent growth of rainbow infused wildflowers motivated us to head out and emerge ourselves in the nature that surrounds the communities of the Coachella Valley. The Whtewater Wilderness Preserve is located about 20 minutes from downtown Palm Springs. Easily reached by driving west on I-10 and using exit 114. You take the... More

Whitewater Preserve is less than 30 minutes by car from Palm Springs, yet takes you out into nature in a big way. There are several trails to explore, with varying degrees of difficulty. The Loop Trail is very popular but a challenge for folks with vertigo. (We had to bail after 30 minutes because of the precipitate drop-offs.) The trail... More

We chose this hike because of the dog-friendly accessibility. It surpassed my expectations. Gorgeous hike and we went along some of the Pacific Crest Trail, which was great! Lots of people, which I liked out hiking with only females and a puppy. Everyone friendly and enjoying the day. some of the terrain was a little steep, which I liked. We... More

My wife and I completed a 4+ hour hike up river at Whitewater a week ago. The day was sunny, but cool. Just right for a vigorous hike. They were busy for President's Day. We parked at the river crossing and walked in past the Preserve going up valley to Red Dome. Lots of water in the river mostly tinted... More

This is our new "find" and we were so lucky to picnic by a cascading waterfall, the result of a major storm system that flooded the area earlier in the week. The waterfalls are temporary as the area is usually dry so we were very fortunate. Unfortunately, the flooding resulted in trail closures so we will have to rerun another... More

Short drive out of Palm Springs to the preserve and very scenic. A 3-4 mile loop from the ranger station takes you up a steady incline that is doable for every level of hiker. Not too strenuous and very photogenic. You connect a bit with The PCT and reach the top of the climb to let you walk along the... More

Hiking extraordinary. The trails are many and fairly easy. Water in the desert and stay away if it's raining. Many beautiful sights to see. Somewhat hidden but right off #10. Don't miss this.

Thank you for protecting this land, Wildlands Conservancy! We are grateful! The wilderness thanks you! This is a great place to go for day hiking if you're anywhere near Palm Springs. Great for families out for a stroll and great for a longer hike on the north of the I-10 section of the PCT.

We set out thinking it was just another desert hike. It was probably the best hike of all. We did the loop trail, about two hours, and will try the Red Dome option next time. Had I read the earlier entries here I would have been better prepared. The Pacific Crest begins with a river bed walk and after 10... More

The 3 of us hiked out of the preserve from the parking area onto PCT and headed north. We crossed the Whitewater wash and continued on eventually taking a spur trail to a great overlook of the Valley below. here we had lunch and spent time taking in nature before returning the same way. We are very experienced and it... More
