Before heading out on Hwy 36, make sure to check with CalTran for road closure times. The week we went, there was a "hard closure" between Bridgeville and Dinsmore from 1 pm to 3 pm local time Friday and 1 pm to 5 pm Monday...More

If you have some car handling skills, a little bit awareness, and some common sense, this road could possibly be the best drive you'll ever go on. Is it a straight city highway? Absolutely not! You shouldn't expect it to be! Highway 299 is wider...More

This road was one of the scariest drives I have ever been on. Four hours of pure hell. I asked at a gas station if 299 or 36 was better to take from Redding to Eureka, he said 299 had slides, but 36 was a...More

About 4 hours long, no guard rails, cell service, chp, or civilization. If you are looking to live on the edge take this road. Especially if its raining & snowing. With the 101 closed you get 2 options to go to northern CA. 299 or...More

I took 36 from Fortuna only because Hwy 299 was closed due to a landslide. I encountered heavy rain, fog and snow. Several stretches are basically just one big lane. There are sheer drop offs with no guard rails and blind curves. Make sure you...More

We left the coastal redwood area to head inland and also ride US50 (The Loneliest Road) in the same day. What a day of contrasts! CA36 is 150 miles of twists, turns, up down. Wonderful on a bike. Since we headed out first thing in...More

The short answer is "Yes", but be very cautious. I did see large trucks on the road but where the road is being repaired it narrows down to one lane with no straights. Good luck!
