When our conference in Orlando was canceled due to covid, we decided to have a vacation anyway, since my husband had taken the time off work and we'd purchased nonrefundable plane tickets.
I've always wanted to visit St. Augustine, so after our first night in Orlando we drove two hours north to the oldest city in America, founded in 1565 by the Spanish.
We were planning to spend Saturday in the historic part of town with friends, so on Friday we drove over to Anastasia Island for the day. We had brunch at the Beachside Diner, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Then we went two blocks down to Island Beachwear, a huge store where we picked up some very reasonably priced souvenirs and tee shirts for our grandboys.
Next we drove to the State Park entrance by the lighthouse. $8 for a day pass. There was a huge parking lot -- nearly empty despite the perfect weather on a Friday afternoon. The boardwalk across the salt marsh and high dunes was a pleasant experience in itself, with wildflowers and butterflies and other interesting flora and fauna.
The beach was glorious. During the course of the afternoon we took long walks, and watched a guy catching fish in the surf, people swimming and playing in the water, and lovely sailboats in the distance. The variety of birds was fantastic. Dogs and motor vehicles aren't allowed on the beach, so the birds allowed us to get up close and they were so fun to watch. I found some nice shells, too.
We had planned on renting kayaks and taking them out in the estuary on the other side of the island, but the beach was too perfect - my husband couldn't drag me away. If I lived nearby, I'd spend all my free time on Anastasia Island!

We enjoyed the beach and everything about Anastasia Island but just walking along A1A just adjacent to the beach was so relaxing and comfortable.

The beach is clean! It is an easy walk from the parking lot to the beach. Family friendly. There is also a little restaurant where you can order drinks and burgers and such, which makes it pretty convenient. There is a bathroom available.

One of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever been to on the Atlantic coast! Wide, powder sand beaches with soft waves! Rivaling the Caribbean!

We rented a condo on Anastasia Island, just across the drawbridge from St. Augustine's Old Town, and I'd recommend that idea to anyone. Our home base was a lovely 3/2 condo on the second floor of Seaside at Anastasia, #F203, if you'd like to check it out. It had a nice balcony with a view of a duck pond and a fountain. It was just across from the beach, and just down the way from several casual eateries.
The further down Anastasia Island you go, the fewer crowds you will see. There is plenty of uncrowded beach access. In addition to condos, there are some hotels directly on the beach.
There is a concert venue on Anastasia Island that you should check out. For example Yanni was playing when we were there.
The only golf course on the island is a lovely, gated country club called Marsh Creek country club. We played golf there but it was a very difficult course due to the surrounding swamp.
We ate at a couple of local seafood eateries, but mostly we dined in at our condo and then to toured St. Auggie's many attractions. We drove up to Ponte Vedra one day and found that very crowded. Too many beachgoers out of Jacksonville.
There is a tour company in St. Augustine that offers a shuttle bus from the island. This might be a good option rather than trying to park a car.
Highly recommend a stay on Anastasia Island!

Really fun experience I go with the family every year. Lots of stuff to do. Plenty of thrift stores too in the area, which I love.

We love Anastasia Island. So peaceful and beautiful. Great views. Walking. Beaches. Restaurants. You feel like you are on vacation away from everything.

Love this beach, not crowded, wide open and easy to get to. Have to pay a fee to get in, $8 per car I think, but worth it to have all the space a family needs to throw a football around, wade in shallow water and not worry about much. Check the tide schedule. Low tide is the best.

The beaches in the St. Augustine area were far better than I remembered from a previous visit. Not too crowded, great surf and sand.

The biggest seashell I've ever found was on Anastasia Island, so I might be partial to it. :)
It's honestly just beautiful and peaceful. Everything about this area is just beautiful!
