I call it my favorite meadow. I didn't know it was a caldera when we drove past it 10 years ago. We were doing Jemez Mountain scenic byway drive and it was close to sunset. The beautiful Valle Grande is the largest grass valley in Valles Caldera. It can be accessed from the observation points along the highway and from the National Preserve. My wife and I visited the Valle Grande, the newest of the National Park Service's Wildlife Preserve. A very special place indeed. A 15 mile wide ancient volcanic caldera, this place is absolutely beautiful. Recently designated (November 2014) as a National Preserve, it is still transitioning to the National Park Service.
