I've been to South Mountains State park twice and this park is just amazing! I love waterfalls so coming to this place was just perfect. There are different hiking trails you can hike but I think there's only one specific one that leads up to...More

It was a rainy, dreary day when we visited. We took a lot of nature photographs. Since it was slippery, we did not walk all the way to the waterfall but it looked nice. Lots of information along the paths. We saw lots of folks...More

I'm amazed that so many folks are unfamiliar with NC's largest state park! South Mountain offers hiking, biking, and horse trails. There are camping sites, picnic sites, and a wonderful education center. There are amazing waterfalls, especially the High Shoals Falls. Trails vary in difficulty...More

We were definitely glad we got to the park early as it was quite crowded as we finished our hike. We hiked High Shoals Falls Loop and started on the left hand side of the loop, making the beginning of the hike all upstairs to...More

This place was far better than what I expected. The trails are beautiful and picturesque with a few waterfalls here and there. There is plenty of parking and picnic tables as well as decent bathrooms at the beginning. Keep in mind most phones won't have...More

First make sure you have directions to and from the park. There isn't any cell service for the trip home. Second carry water and drink it while hiking before you get dehydrated. It snuck up on me and I almost passed out. The water fall...More

I have been to this place approximately 15 times, and I can say this place is amazing! If you have some kind of stair climbing disability the main trail going up to the waterfall is not for you. Be prepared to tackle multiple fleets of...More

This state park is really a gem and you can see many locals visiting here for a picnic or a quick visit to the falls. The high Shoals loop trail is classified as “strenuous” and I believe it is so because of the many steps...More

This place is gorgeous. Very nice bathrooms too. We only stayed the night but I'd definitely go back here. It was further off the interstate than my phone map led me to believe but it was worth it. Park Ranger was so sweet and helpful!

The cell service is spotty so you may want to warn your mom that you may be inaccessible while you're there.
