Though the Library of Congress doesn't own every book ever published, it sure has most of them, with 532 miles of shelves and 115 million items, with 7,000 added each working day.

LoC offers a glimpse at how our government stores our collective written and recorded history. Many rare and unique documents are available for viewing here by special arrangement. Less esoteric titles can be viewed almost nay time.

I had been to DC multiple times before but never stopped at the library. It is well worth the stop! We originally had tried to set up a tour through our representative but they were full, but the staff directed us to go Day of...More

This is a hidden treasure which not many people visit, but should be In your "must visit" list. It is amazing that our tax dollars support such a wonderful institution and so few use it.

Beautiful architecture and surroundings. The exhibits in the Library's Thomas Jefferson Building are amazing historic artifacts. A beautiful place. Recommend a Guided tour to learn more interesting details and history. Definitely must visit while in the DC area.library

We always concentrate on the Smithsonian museums and never visited this place before but it was well worth the time. It's not a bunch of books like a boring library (except for Thomas Jefferson's collection!!) but another museum like experience with a few fun exhibits...More

We visited the US Capitol Building first, then took the underground tunnel to the LOC, Jefferson Building. Just being inside such a famous and monumental place was inspiring, but they also have very interesting exhibits, plus Jefferson's collection. I highly recommend a visit.

This library is definitely worth a visit. Reportedly with 600 miles / 960 km + of shelf space, it's the largest library in the world and incredibly beautiful.

I agree, 90 minutes to 2 hours is a good time frame to put aside, that would give you enough time to either tour on your own or take a guided tour, plus have time to look around on your own if you do decide to do the tour... More
Are pictures allowed? And, I heard there were letters on display that corresponded between Alexander Hamilton and Angelica Schuyler. Is this true?

There are some places you cannot take pictures. Eg: the center round room where you can do research. I am sure it has a name, but I can't remember it. It was so beautiful inside and I wanted to take a picture. I asked the... More
