Less crowded than the Met in NY. It has a feeling of gracious space. I enjoy relaxing for a few moments at a time in one of the spacious glassed in courtyards & the art collection is superb.

If you are in DC be sure and stop by the National Gallery and catch a free art show that will make your day. Great collection of contemporary art that is constantly being reworked along with interesting special shows of single artists or group shows...More

My second visit centered around the soon-to-end Vermeer exhibit which was beautifully curated. You can spend days here. The ground floor cafe closed at 3 pm Saturday which made the one downstairs a madhouse so I scratched that idea.

We arrived at 10:30 am for 11 a.m opening time of the museum. We waited only a few minutes outside before we were allowed inside and could check our coats. It took about 45 minutes to get into the exhibit. The crowds were intense but...More

I love this place - no matter how often we visit and how long we stay there is more to see. The East Wing alone is spectacular. And the cafes are a bonus when a break is needed.

An outstanding exhibit with many Vermeer's and fellow Dutch artists. We are so blessed to have the Smithsonian. You can never see it all!

There are few rivals to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. with separate West (historic) and East (contemporary) buildings joined by an underground walkway. Depending on your interests, it could easily take a day to do a cursory overview of both wings (there...More

21st January 2018. Not easy to see Vermeers in the US, so well worth a special trip to visit this exhibition!

I visited midday on a weekday, and there was no line. Though busy, it was not crowded.
