I am SO GLAD we took a break from the ridiculously over-crowded, over-rated Smithsonian museums on the National Mall... and took a few hours to explore the National Museum of US Navy on our recent trip to DC. I visited with my 9 yr old...More

I had a few hours between meeting and decided to tour the museum. WOW! I now wished I had done so on the many other trips to the Navy Yard. If you have the desire to learn about our countries Naval History, this is the...More

I am surprised by the negative comments about the required forms to fill out when you arrive. It is an active Naval/Marine base and do people just expect that in the times we live you can just walk on the base freely? We were treated...More

it's true that the background check takes some time and you need to fill in forms and even show your car insurance. however, it is totally worthy it. love the submarine part. the only shortcoming is I would like to see more aircraft carriers history.

This museum will exceed every expectation you have for a historical museum. It is clearly superior to the much more politically correct National Museum of American History on the Smithsonian grounds downtown. If you want to develop an in depth understanding of every major historical...More

Come with a military friend for easier entrance. The Navy Yard Metro station is the closest, but the Visitor's entrance for the base is about a 20 minute walk from there. If you are not military or you do not have a friend with a...More

The Museum is located in the heart of the Navy Yard compound in SE of Washington D.C. It is a good place to learn about the U.S. Navy; duties, fleets, and function. Without government ID, visitors must report to the visitor center at 11 St....More

Note that public access for non-military people is extremely limited. The gate guard reported that in week days it was possible, but I am uncertain that is correct. Here's what the museum website says about access: Washington Navy Yard Directions & Base Access Information Base...More

You have to check in at the Main Gate, fill out a form, then you are allowed entry. You can walk around the base (parts are restricted access). Enjoy.

Cynthia, There are handicap spots in the lot across the street from the Museum. Like most parking facilities, however, the spots are first come, first serve. Please contact the Museum at 202-433-4882. for more information... More
