Visit the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation on their 5 1/2 acre site set in the foothills of the San Gabrial Mountains, less than 2 miles from the 210 freeway. Public hours: Thurs and Sat, 12-4pm Sam Maloof was one of the most respected furniture makers of the 20th century. His rocking chairs were highly esteemed by both Presidents Reagan and Carter. His home was hand built by Sam and his assistants over a period of 40 years and reflects Sam's love of finely crafted wood, right down to unique hand-crafted wooden latches and hinges on the doors. When threatened by the 210 Freeway, several of his patrons banded together to assure the home received the recognition it deserved on the National Register of Historic Places where it is cited as a work of art in its own right. The home and associated shops where Sam continued to build furniture until his death at 93 in 2009 were moved to the current site in Alta Loma. This site now includes the historic home, which is open for docent led tours at a small fee, the Jacobs Education Center which presents changing exhibits and the lovely Gardens which encompass five different landscapes of California native plants and Mediterranean plants which demonstrate water wise gardening for Southern California home owners. The Gardens are open at no charge, as is the Jacobs Education center when there is a show in the center. Reservations for the Historic Home tours are strongly suggested.

Amazing house of a master craftsman. Knowledgeable docents that have much history to share.Gardens are fairly large and lovely with cactus, succulents, and citrus. There are stairs, but they have videos for those that can't climb them.

I agree with other comments that it is not really activity rich. There's a tour of the house, a walk thru museum and big sculpture and flower garden to walk thru
