I recently became an annual pass holder again after working for Disneyland the past 8 and a half years. Needless to say, the magic is still there for me and I can’t stay away.
I’ve taken some solo trips, but I usually go with family...More

I was looking to pre-purchase as well and being afraid of scam sites we took our chances and purchased at the park. When we went there was no lines for the tickets and the clerk was extremely helpful and accommodating. Be prepared though for lines at security. Recommend you take in as little as possible. Military get substantial discount.

I love the magic of Disneyland on holidays but echo what others have said: it's not worth the frustration to go on July 4th. You may get on 4 rides the entire day and will spend most of the day waiting in line to ride, to get food, to use the restroom, etc. When the park is that crowded, you can't even walk from one side to the other without constantly running into people. It took me over an hour to walk from the Jungle Cruise to the front gates on Christmas Day (for perspective, that should only be a 10-minute walk).
If your heart is set on seeing the Disney fireworks that day, I recommend booking a hotel room nearby that faces the park so you can enjoy some of the festivities without actually entering the park. Even 7/3 or 7/5 will be more enjoyable than 7/4, though still crowded.
If you choose to ignore all the advice here and go that day, at the very least you want to download the Play Disney app. It has some games you can play while waiting in line and uses GPS to give you certain achievements when you've ridden on certain rides. It also has some fun trivia. You absolutely have to be there about an hour before the park opens to get in and to make sure you can grab at least one fast pass before they are all gone.
Nearby Newport Beach (any of the beaches in SoCal, honestly) has a free fireworks display and parade on July 4th. Traffic getting in and out of there will be difficult but not too bad if you go early in the day. Parking will be crazy but you can park about one mile from the beach and take an Uber the rest of the way in. There are lots of fun holiday activities to do in surrounding cities that would be less of a headache.
Oh! The Disneyland Hotel I bet will have some fun things happening at their pool that day. You likely have to be a hotel guest or purchase a day pass to use their pool, but they have an awesome tiki bar with audio animatronic animals and they will probably have some drink and food specials for the holiday. Lots of ways to experience a piece of the Disney magic without the headache of the long lines inside the park. Good luck!
