The dirt parking lot is small, so if you get there later in the morning you may have to wing it (park in a non-spot or outside the area or skip it). A short walk over the bridge brings you to a small inclined walk...More

If you turn left before bridge over the creek, the falls are just a short easy walk. There is a picnic bench if you want to bring lunch. You'll need to back track back to the bridge and cross over to check out the Grottos....More

A must see if in Aspen. As another stated, do not go by GPS instruction, just follow signs. It is 9.9 miles from Aspen on CO 82. There are a number of trails that you can choose from depending on how intense a hike you...More

Don't listen to your GPS is she lies to you and claims it's less than 2 miles from Aspen. It's closer to 9 miles up Independence Pass. It was worth it; I'd go again with guests. Easy but the ice caves require some sure-footedness.

The grotto's trail area is a very nice place to spend an afternoon-- there are a number of easy hikes from the parking area, and a pretty waterfall just 15 minutes from the parking lot. Directions: as you approach the grotto's parking area, slow down...More

I lived in Aspen for a few years as a child and always remembered the Grottos as really cool so when traveling with the family one summer we came back to check it out. It's not as big as I remember (I guess that's how...More

The Grottos, and nearby trail, are East of Aspen, on Hwy 82, as it heads upward over Independence pass. The Roaring Fork River comes from the high country down through rocks and small water falls to a deep pool which is dangerous as the falling...More

Having been to Aspen numerous times, going to the Grottos is always a treat. My advice is to take a picnic lunch and go downstream to get away from the crowds. You can find an amazing tranquil setting to enjoy the natural beauty of the area....More

This was a nice hike to the cascades. We really enjoyed the view. It would have been nice to take a picnic and enjoy it by the rustling water. The trails are pretty well identified, but it is easy to get off track if you...More

Staying in Aspen, I took a day to hike and photograph the Grottos. This is a very special place, and well worth the trip there. It's just past the 50 mile marker coming from Aspen, and there is a sign for the pull out. Be...More

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
Do you need to register/reserve a campsite at Grottos Campground? Or is it first come, first served?

The Grottoes trail is not connected to a campsite. There is a campsite not far from there called "Difficult Campground ". Call the U S Forest Service for information.
We are considering either the Rinker or Waterwheel. do you know what type seating(couch chairs ect.) is available in the living area for each cabin?

No, I'm sorry I do not. I stayed in Snowmass while I was there and only stopped by the Grottos trail on my drive back towards Denver. Enjoy your trip!
