This is such a beautiful dirt at times/asphalt at time 20 mile trail between Aspen and Basalt. It takes about 2 hours and is mostly downhill from Aspen to Basalt.

We ride from Aspen to Hanging Lakes (temporary closed), around 52 miles almost all downhill and take the bus back to Aspen. Its marvelous because the trail is mostly paved (about a mile of gravel just outside Aspen) and stunningly beautiful. The weather is so...More

... a great way to explore the area by bike and burn some calories after a day lazing (and eating) around Aspen. This rails-to-trails bike path will lead you to a variety of offshoots and along portions of the Roaring Fork river as it snakes...More

This paved trail along the river is easy and relatively flat. We walked for about 1 hour round-trip but could have walked longer. The rushing water, snow-covered rocks, & aspens along the banks, were lovely and peaceful.

We biked from Carbondale to Aspen and back and yes, we worked up quite a hunger and thirst. Impeccable scenery with Mt. Sopris, Roaring Fork River and fall colors. It was especially fun to the bike the last few miles into Aspen (hard surface gravel)...More

I would recommend taking a walk on the Rio Grande trail at any time of year. The Aspen Parks Department keeps it plowed in the winter months. With no car traffic around it feels like an oasis year around.

We rented our bikes (and subsequently bought them, since we come every year and have a residence interest at the Ritz) from Four Mountain Sports. The rental and subsequent purchase were quite reasonable. (970) 920-2337
