- Wade11 contributionsAlmost guaranteed turtle sightingsI did the usual tourist thing (Hol Chan Turtle Gardens, I believe it's called), scuba diving. Twice. I wish I'd had time to go back a third time. This part of the Belize Barrier Reef is the most populated that I've seen so far (vs Sapodilla Cayes and the reef east of San Pedro), with many medium to large schools of fish. The main attraction is the turtles that come to eat the sea grass in the shallower areas. There were several nearby each time I visited, and they're pretty accustomed to tourists so you can get very close (though watch their body language for signs that you're bothering them, such as when they "sit up" on the bottom). For divers, be mindful that there's often a moderate current in the deeper sections, beyond the sea grass. I imagine it's still a hoot as a snorkeler, especially if you're comfortable free diving a little (it's only a few metres deep where the turtles are), but of course scuba diving is where it's at. You get much more time to spend with the turtles (and other wildlife), and can get right down on their level rather than just a bird's eye view.Visited December 2022Written December 11, 2022
- maddykayVancouver, Canada69 contributionsDo it!We did this tour twice. Alley shark was so much fun. Very safe and the staff was very knowlegable. If you have a small face like me bring your own mask as both times my rented mask was leaking. none of the masks they had fit me.Visited November 2022Written December 17, 2022
- Jay S9 contributionsNice reef snorkelingWe did a 2-1/2 hour excursion to Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley with Ambergris Divers. We were fortunate to have picked one of the less breezy days of the week and that made for a really pleasant experience. We saw a turtle, eagle ray, smaller.rays, a moray eel and numerous colorful and unique fish at Hol Chan. This really is a must-do while you're on or near Ambergris Caye. Less experienced snorkelers would probably do well to use a flotation device but it's not critical.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten January 21, 2023
- 986kayrOmaha, Nebraska9 contributionsA must do on a Belize vacation!Literally the highlight of our vacation! My kids said it was like being in a big zoo aquarium. We have snorkeled in lots of great locations and they said by far this was the best they have ever done. It felt really short but they do a good job of moving everyone along. Make sure you get a good tour guide and do this!Visited December 2022Written January 22, 2023
- Tiffany B4 contributionsAMAZING!!!I learned so much. I never knew it was part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef or the Belize Barrier Reef (2nd largest in the world). They take great care in preserving it. Our tour guide made sure that we had a great time while not disturbing it. A sea turtle swam right up to us and just stared showing curiosity with our presence. So many fish! Amazing corral structures and variety. Sharks and sting rays. I am so grateful to give that experience to my family.Visited January 2023Written January 23, 2023
- Duvel11FrederickMiddletown, Maryland160 contributionsExtraordinary Experience! Not to be missed experience! Undoubtedly, the #1 experience of our trip! Our guide, James with Searious, was superlative. Without him, we would have missed half the sea life. He also provided the best snorkeling instructions, simple and easy to follow, that I've received. As one who is retired from special education administration, I was especially taken by the care and attention the captain, Ivor, and first mate, James, gave to an older man who navigated on land with a cane and wheelchair. The team treated him with the utmost respect and got him in the water and out without fanfare. Great job, guys!Visited January 2023Written January 26, 2023
- Em TCalgary, Canada53 contributionsLots of marine lifeI felt like I was swimming in an aquarium! So much marine life here. We even saw a turtle. I would recommend visiting here. We did a private tour here and to Shark Ray Alley in the same day.Visited January 2023Written January 30, 2023
- Bob PDenver, Colorado63 contributionsAmazing Snorkeling, Second Largest Barrier Reef in the World!I appreciate the dedication of the People of Belize to protect this treasure. The water is not too deep for good snorkelers. Most providers have ample resources to allow even inexperienced snorkelers the chance to experience this amazing opportunity. This is not a free-snorkel area, rather you are guided. Our guide was so informative and educational. We were away from other groups and the experience was pleasant. This barrier reef is the second largest in the World and affords a wonderful experience to everyone willing to get in the water.Visited March 2023Written March 13, 2023
- Alex M3 contributionsWonderful half day snorkeling excursionWe didn't stay at the hotel but booked a half day snorkeling excursion to Hol Chan and shark alley based on a recommendation from our airbnb host. Fanny was very helpful in getting our group of 6 friends booked for our excursion, and George and the rest of the guides on Tuesday afternoon/evening this week were fantastic. All of them were very funny and engaging, told us a lot of interesting historical information along the ride to the snorkeling spots. Amazing experience seeing the aquatic animal and plant life so up close, and now we can say we have swam with sharks! (And no one lost a leg! 😄) The crew gave us lots of great recommendations for food options and other activities and we put those to good use on the rest of our trip, so that was very appreciated too. Great value for the money spent, would definitely recommend an excursion through Blue Tang Inn. Did not stay at the hotel itself though.Written April 7, 2023
- GeneralShamuNew York City, New York1,058 contributionsSnorkeling and Scuba GaloreThis coral reef system is just so beautiful that words will never adequately describe it. It is an absolute must for everyone visiting Caye Caulker and/or Ambergris Caye. The tour we went on provided life jackets and a buoy for a pregnant woman that was a beginner swimmer. Didn’t see any children though so TBD on that front.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten June 28, 2023

Our family tour of Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley was pleasantly enhanced by our Tuff E Nuff guide, Rahul! His emphasis on safety was mirrored by his expressed interest in teaching the history of the remarkeable area and the countless fish species names and habitat. The experience exceeded our expectations in large part due to Rahul.

What a gorgeous reef, plenty of areas of live coral and fish, including nurse sharks, southern ray, spotted eagle ray, barracudas, puffer fish, groupers, snappers, etc etc. The tour guide we had (Amigos del Mar) were excellent and the helpful in showing us the most active areas of the reserve.

Gorgeous. The Belize Pro Dive Center next to the Alaia, Belize Hotel was exceptional. Big applause to Jonathan on the dive team. My first time. Was totally taken care of throughout the snorkel… made sure my mask was adjusted during the dive and was clearly, well educated on the local fish. I can’t say enough. They have much to be proud of.

You must go with a tour in order to visit Hol Chan as there are limited spaces for boats and they have to be reserved in advance by your tour provider. Our tour provider took us on a guided snorkeling tour, you are not allowed to just swim around the reserve on your own, they require it to be guided. Our provider had life vests for all passengers which made snorkeling much easier, there were no children on our tour however and I did not see any children at the reserve on the day we went.

Hol Chan I keep hearing is a must. But Not so interested in the rays and the sharks and touching them and all that. More into healthy coral, colorful fish, or course would love to come across turtles or manatees. So is Hol Chan still the place for all that? And if so are we supposed to request a different section of Holchan like the reef? Versus shark Ray Allie? Or are there perhaps other areas like Mexico rocks or trust cocos that we should be targeting? Any help appreciated

You would probably start at Hol Chan and then go over to shark ray alley. You don’t have to get out of the boat when they go to shark ray alley and most tours are only at that part for 15-20 minutes. We saw several turtles at Hol Chan, and tons of other marine life. I will say, I thought the coral was prettier at Mexico Rocks, but more sea life at Hol Chan.

No age restrictions. On our tour there was a family who had a 3 year old daughter and 5 year old son. They both joined the group at the first location during snorkeling. When we went to the second location to swim with the sharks and rays, their parents opted to stay in the boat and watch. Life jackets and snorkeling gear are provided.

Hi,
My name is Lorenzo. I'll be on Caye Caulker on July 8. The wind forecast shows 25mph and higher. Is snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine preserve still doable? Is the preserve protect from the wind in some way?
I'd love to get a heads on what to expect regarding snorkeling at Hol Chan during high winds. I really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Lorenzo

Fishing isn’t allowed at the reserve and not sure how close you can be to Hol Chan to be able to fish. Unsure about what you’ll need as I only fished in the other side of the island and that was with Belize Fishing Charters and they provided everything for us.

Is “coral gardens” the same place that you are dropped off for the normal “Hol Chan” reef tours? Some tours say Hol Chan/shark and ray alley, while others say coral gardens/shark and ray alley. If these are not the same places, what are the major differences between the two reefs (Hol Chan and coral gardens) and which reef stacks up better in terms of the coral available to see. Thank you!

They are two different places. We never visited coral gardens. I was informed it would be a great place to see manatees, sea turtles . Possibly seahorses as it is closer to caye caulker.

I don’t know the name of their company but a young man named Milo and his nephew Jean run a hol Chan tour and they are excellent!! Milo is very patient and both are VERY knowledgeable about the sea and Belize history. If you’re not sure who to ask, try asking the staff at the Ocean Tide sea view hotel, as they are affiliated with Milo and Jean. Enjoy Belize!! By the way, if you happen to drive to secret beach in one of those golf carts, be sure to take along mosquito repellent for the ride.

I visited Hol Chan in the early 1990’s and the reef was incredibly healthy, abundant sea life, giant groupers hanging under the coral walls. Then, in 2005-2007 was back. Much of the coral was bleached, groupers were gone, fish life was reduced by at least 60% due to overfishing and fertilizer spill-off. Has it come back, or will i be heartbroken by what remains of what was an overwhelmingly pristine reef environment.

This is a late post but I thought I would weigh in on the coral bleaching. I dived here in 2015 and again last month. On my 2015 trip, there wasn't bleaching that I can remember. On my trip last month, I was saddened to see that about 15% of the reef off of San Pedro was bleached and another 10% was going fluorescent, which is the stage before bleaching. That said, I did not notice any bleaching in Hol Chan than I can remember and the bleaching on the most Northerly reefs was much less than in the central area off of San Pedro. Hol Chan was abundant with sea life and seemed very healthy.
