About
Green Hills Butterfly Ranch is the premier Live Butterfly Exibit in Belize. Green Hills literally has thousands of live butterflies on display in a 4,000 square feet walk-in flight area. See the full metamorphosis from egg to adult butterfly. The photo opportunities are unlimited. The tour of the butterfly flight area and the Caterpillar Center takes about an hour. The facilities are surrounded by a botanical garden with more than 150 plants, shrubs and trees. There is a hummingbird viewing and photographic area where the average visitor can easily see a multitude of species. During the visit you are welcome to take advantage of the covered picnic area and clean restrooms. WiFi is freely available. Green Hills is worth a stop on your way to or from other popular destinations such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Barton Creek, Caracol or the nearby villages of San Antonio and El Progresso. We open at 9am and close at 4 pm every day of the year.

This was recommended by our guide from another adventure so we stopped on the way back to our AirBNB. Our tour guide Sylvia was awesome. She was very informative, patient and knowledgable. We loved seeing all the butterflies. The dozens of hummingbirds were also a highlight. We love the work that they are doing here.

The price was a bit more than expected but it goes towards a good cause.

Stopped by in our rental car after Barton Cave tour and really enjoyed the tour by Erving and seeing the beautiful butterflies, as well as learning all about their life cycle. Ask about the trail cam photos of local wildlife on the preserve! So glad places like this exist to educate and help us appreciate how cool the natural world is- felt like our admission price was going to something very worthwhile and important. Never knew there were butterflies with TRANSPARENT wings!! Look closely at my “rock” photo- there is a butterfly there!

Excellent opportunity to view the life cycle of the butterfly as well as experience the flight of these beautiful creatures. The farm releases 25% to the natural environment.

We were fortunate enough to have a visit to this butterfly farm included in our group tour. I am so glad that we did as it gave us an opportunity to see thousands of butterflies in a very large enclosure, free to fly, eat or just laze around on the flowers. Butterflies are difficult to appreciate in the wild as they flit around too much (I think), but here you could spend as much time with them as you wanted, and I got some good photos. Lily gave us a good guided tour explaining the stages of a butterfly's life and showing how the pupae are prepared for sending abroad (some to the UK, she told us). There are covered areas for picnics and very clean toilets.

Susany was a great guide to the fascinating Butterfly Ranch. She was very knowledgeable about the many kinds of butterflies, as well as the pupae from which they hatched.

We so enjoyed our visit to the butterfly ranch. There were more butterflys than we could have imagined, and Sylvia gave us a fascinating tour that really drew us into the work they are doing there to promote butterflies. There are also many kinds of of hummingbirds there.
If we had known there were trails we would have saved time to walk on them. Next time!

If you’re looking for something more laid back, what’s not to like about tropical butterflies and hummingbirds? Certainly put a smile on our faces. Sylvia gave us a good tour. They grow some of the butterflies for export, some to show off at the site and they claim to release some back into the wild. I believe she said they grow 18 different species, including Blue Morpho, Mexican Bluewing, Common Owl and Glasswing. Stuff you don’t see in the U.S. You can do the tour in about an hour, and you’re allowed to roam the grounds afterward which would be good for birders, which we’re not. Might be a little pricey at $20 US per adult and $10 per kid, but not bad. And it’s a nice drive from San Ignacio.

I visited the Butterfly Farm independently without a tour group, which I would recommend. You can get a taxi from San Ignacio and arrange for the driver to wait for you for a reasonable price before driving back. It was nice to talk to the taxi driver and learn about life in Belize, and this was also a cheaper option than a tour. Cleydi, who showed me around the Butterfly Farm, was very knowledgeable and provided a thorough explanation of all the stages of life for a butterfly. I was happy to support the Butterfly Fly because I believe in their mission and appreciate what they’re doing. Worth the visit if you love nature and creatures!
