About
Green Hills Butterfly Ranch is the premier Live Butterfly Exibit in Belize. Green Hills literally has thousands of live butterflies on display in a 4,000 square feet walk-in flight area. See the full metamorphosis from egg to adult butterfly. The photo opportunities are unlimited. The tour of the butterfly flight area and the Caterpillar Center takes about an hour. The facilities are surrounded by a botanical garden with more than 150 plants, shrubs and trees. There is a hummingbird viewing and photographic area where the average visitor can easily see a multitude of species. During the visit you are welcome to take advantage of the covered picnic area and clean restrooms. WiFi is freely available. Green Hills is worth a stop on your way to or from other popular destinations such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Barton Creek, Caracol or the nearby villages of San Antonio and El Progresso. We open at 9am and close at 4 pm every day of the year.

All in one rainforest butterfly facility
Have made two multi week trips and returning for a third. Was privileged to be allowed to explore the land (massive property with mountains in the rainforest). While we found many species of butterflies, we also were able to photograph tarantulas, beetles, coatimundi, orchids, vistas, bats, birds, reptiles, and moths. Some were very uncommon or rare. A well run place that preserves the natural world. If you miss going then you have missed out.

    What a treat!
Oh my gosh! What a treat! Worth the drive :) Our guide Cleydi was excellent and gave us lots of great info about the butterflies, caterpillars, hummingbirds, and plants in the area. Being in the butterfly house with butterflies landing on me and flying all around me was a highlight of my trip to Belize! We also got to sit and watch tons of hummingbirds eat from the bird feeders, just 3 feet away from us. It was a magical day!

Experience the fragile beauty of the butterflies and hummingbirds
Really enjoyed our butterfly experience with Shanell here. Shanell was so knowledgeable and took great pride in telling us about the sanctuary that the owner has built to conserve the area and how this has shaped her own new outlook on her environment. The butterflies are beautiful and we were mesmerised by the hummingbirds, we saw 6 different species! Definitely take about 1.5 hrs to go here and enjoy this.

    Butterflies and hummingbirds
We visited the beautiful butterfly ranch yesterday! It was amazing to see the butterflies as well as the work that they do to help the butterflies 🦋 and the rain forest. Cleydi was a wonderful tour guide and very knowledgeable. She told us about the various butterflies they had there and showed us the different lifestyle stages of the butterflies. It was awesome to see so many hummingbirds as well. Hearing the hummingbirds zoom by and watching them feed was so enjoyable!

    Amazing experience!
Amazing experience! The guide was very friendly and insightfull and showed us around and taught us about the whole butterfly cycle. They have many different species of butterflies and walking around in the little house was so beautifull! Right outside you could also sit and watch all the different hummingbirds flying around, i could have sat there all day just watching them. I recommend anyone in the area to drop by!

    A Walk among the buetterflies
Amazing! This is a great place to visit when you're in Cayo, Belize! It is very well run and staffed. We experienced the entire lifecycle of several different butterfly species. Walking in the Butterfly House was amazing with hundreds of adults eating and laying eggs, the different foods that they eat and plants that make up their natural environment. We had butterflies landing on us and circling around our heads. On the way to the nursery, where you can see the lifecycle from to eggs to larvae to pupae to adult, you will pass through the hummingbird feeding area where the "jedi of the sky" will zip in and out around you to access the feeders. There are many different species and 'flash cards' available so that you can attempt to identify each as they rocket past you before hovering at a feeder for the briefest of moments! Words and even video does not do this experience justice, truly a 'must see'.

    Educational Nature Place
I love going to butterfly houses all over the world. This one was especially fun as the staff is very knowledgeable about the butterflies and can dive deep into questions I'm interested in. I got to see all stages of the butterflies and how they raised them. I could spend hours in their butterfly enclosure and the music makes it very peaceful. Very nicely done and I would visit again if I'm in the area. The hummingbirds were an added bonus for me. I enjoyed watching them fight for the feeders. Had fun taking some slow motion video on them.

    Perfect for butterfly lovers!
I have been obsessed with butterflies ever since I was a little girl so this place was like a dream come true! You are surrounded by so many butterflies of different species! My tour guide Silvia was very educated and informative on every species. She taught me about all the different kinds of butterflies, their lifespans as both a caterpillar and then as a butterfly as well as the individual relationship each butterfly has with each plant. Such a cool experience! All the different hummingbirds at the end was really neat as well

    Oh wow! Oh WOW
We stopped in on our way to San Ignacio, planned for a walk around to stretch our legs, and go find the place we’re staying however we were so blown away by the hummingbirds, we stayed 3 hours and probably only left because it was closing time. We had some time a couple days later and came back! We’re pretty sure we saw 6-7 different hummingbirds and there were so many of them!

Dely was our guide, an excellent guide. All the butterflies, simply amazing. She gave us a tour of the whole site, shared so much of her knowledge with us about butterflies. We will return next year.

Ervin picked us up from the place we were staying and gave us a fact-filled ride about Belize all the way to the Butterfly farm! We were able to see the hummingbirds and learn about different types. We were even greeted with chips, guac, and a Belikin beer! Note: this was for something called the butterfly “happy hour” so ask for that if you want something right before sunset. The butterflies were beautiful and our other tour guide was knowledgeable and could answer most questions. We highly recommend!!

We added this short tour on to our day at the last minute, and I’m so glad we did! Besides seeing amazing butterflies up close, it was so educational as well. Our guide, Shanell, did a wonderful job of explaining their life cycle and how much work and dedication it takes to keep them alive and healthy throughout the process. And the owners of this ranch do so much to keep the wild population going strong with their release practices. I highly advise to visit this ranch while visiting Belize! I only wish that I had time to explore their hiking trails as well.

Roni, our guide, was excellent - very knowledgeable and friendly, and he even let us hold some giant caterpillars! There were thousands of butterflies and it was easy to get lots of good photos. We also had the opportunity to sit right next to the hummingbird feeders (a new experience for us as we don't have them in the UK!). The visit and tour was well worth the entry fee.

We met Robin Greaves, the very interesting owner of the Ranch, and learned about its origin and purposes. A great place for conservation and renewal of natural resources, plus excellent education for all visitors. I recommend a visit for any family!

My husband and I stopped by when traveling from San Ignacio to Caye Caulker. The pirates at our San Ignacio hotel wanted to charge us $121 USD pp just to go back and forth from our hotel to the Butterfly Farm. We found a travel agency in San Ignacio that picked us up at our San Ignacio hotel and waited for us at Green Hills and then took us to the ferry in Belize City for $85 USD pp.
The butterfly tour was excellent and we stayed for a little over an hour. There are trails on the property and hummingbird feeders so could easily spend a few hours there but we had a ferry to catch. Highly recommend!
