We went to the Botanic Gardens on Christmas day since it was open as well as the restaurant. Started off with a great lunch and the spent he next few hours roaming the premises. We did the guideless tour and just took our time. This tour came with a little booklet that described everything in some detail. Trails were well... More

Loved this adventure at the DuPlooys Lodge. The road is long and a bit bumpy, recommend 4 wheel drive, but it's worth the trip

We did an awesome canoe trip down the Mecal River. We stopped at DuPlooy's Jungle Lodge beach, walked up to check out the botanic gardens, had lunch and carried on. It was a great day!

An unpaved road from the highway takes you here. But tickets at the main office. The garden is fairly interesting, laid out into distinct areas- rainforest, savanna etc. Neatly kept grounds. You will also see a number of birds here. Small orchid house, but none flowering when we were there. Does not match up to Botanic gardens I have seen... More

In mid-december we were the only tourists there, and despite several hours of walking around, didn't see everything in the 45 acres.

This is also a great place for bird watching. There is a tower which you climb to get a great view of the mountains.

Some friends and I stayed at du Plooy's for 3 nights and visited the Botanic Gardens several times/day including once with a birding guide. Different times of day offered different highlights and we loved exploring the hiking trails and bridges along the river, the medicine trail, and the orchid house. Highly recommended!

If you're in Cayo, don't miss the Belize Botanic Gardens, on the grounds of duPlooy's Lodge. It was started by the late Ken duPlooy, who traveled across Belize and Central America collecting specimens for the gardens. His work started in the late 1980s, and today many of his collected specimens have grown into large trees. Ken's spouse, Judy, and the... More

The drive to the Botanical Gardens at duPlooy’s was like most of the driving around the Cayo District, wild and crazy with the added twist of driving up a very steep grade for a large part of the excursion. The destination even with rain and bugs is very beautiful. Take the guided tour for added benefit. It was not expensive.... More
