Be real careful what company you use We had a "Long rough" ride (1 -1 1/2 hour) in a panga. The snorkeling was awesome, but for the very long uncomfortable ride, 15-20 minutes of snorkeling NOT worth it! A fresh catch lunch was offered but, again, way too long to hang around on a very small island full discarded fish parts and leftover shells from the local fishermen. This location didn't have any coral or interesting snorkeling.

Went snorkeling with Seahorse Dive and Capt Sean/Humble Harry and had the BEST TIME! Harry videoed our entire trip and sent us the video. He pointed out unique and coral along the way.
This island has been recently rehabbed from erosion and to see the story of what this tour guides all got together to do to save Silk Caye is remarkable in itself.
Might I suggest that you go very hungry but the amazing meal the 6 ladies were fed included lobster, fresh fresh and bar-b-q chicken!!!! Who gets this on a snorkeling trip! Oh yeah.. did I forget to mention the banana pudding slices!!
Gorgeous island - take care of her!

We went here with Captain Jacks from Mariposa Resort and loved it. We snorkeled around the quaint little island, ate some grilled chicken then went out about a mile and did some more snorkeling before catching some fish and heading back to the mainland. We all had a great time.

Very disappointed with snorkeling. Mostly near dead habitat. If never snorkeled before probably never do again. Went to second place nearby and saw turtles and rays. Nice but lots of eel grass. There hopefully are better snorkeling locations than this. I have been a diver for 60 years and brought non diving friends

Took this excursion from Placencia and thoroughly enjoyed it. Ride to & from can be bumpy. Tip: sit towards the back of the boat. But the snorkeling was very nice. Lunch was spartan but good. Be prepared for almost no facilities. Still, I would go again.

Very small. Snorkeling was ok, nothing spectacular. We saw a huge Sea ray and Turtle off the reef a short distance away though. Not sure it was worth the long trek to get there but it was pretty cool. Might be better if it were lumped together with another Caye.

We went out on a private excursion with Blake Leslie to Silk Caye to snorkel and had a great time! We were the second boat to the island in the morning (the first boat was his friend) and it was great having the place to ourselves. By the time we finished snorkeling around the island there were about ten other boats there--so I would recommend taking a private trip if you can to get there early to get beautiful photos of the island and a better experience. We saw all sorts of marine life and really had an amazing time. The water clarity was very good when we first got there but definitely deteriorated once a lot more boats were arriving and stirring up the sea floor.

Our family of 4 enjoyed the boat ride and snorkeling around Silk Caye with Andrea from Splash Dive shop. The Caye is a beautiful place to relax with decent snorkeling all around. The best part was when we swam further out away from the Caye into an area of nurse sharks, turtles and rays. We were lucky enough to swim with about a dozen nurse sharks and large turtle. One of the highlights of my visit to Belize! Knowledgeable, professional, and friendly divers and boat captain. Would definitely do this tour again!

The most amazing day! We went with OceanMotion (highly recommended) - all the better as it was just 4 of us which is the minimum for the boat trip. We had had a daytrip to Laughingbird Caye a few days earlier, just the two of us and paying an extra 10$ each (all trips in Placencia are always marketed in USD; prices in bars and stores BZD) and there we had a personal tour of the reefs. At Silk Caye we were allowed to snorkel the reef by oursleves which was great, taking time to linger above coral areas of interest - although it was good to know what to look for having had an escorted snorkeling tour at Laughingbird.
The water was clearer plus the coral and fish more spectacular at Silk so DO NOT miss this tour if you are in the area. Do's and Dont's are as follows:
Do expect a long bumpy ride each way (1 hour 15 mins to get there). TIP: Take something soft and waterproof to sit on if you are susceptible to bumpy rides.
- Do prepare to spend your time photographing when not saying 'wow'. TIP: Invest in a waterproof camera (see our pics)
- Do be ready for an amazing chicken beach lunch cooked right there while you snorkel. TIP: Specify fish before you leave if you need an alternative. VERY BIG TIP: Buy a couple of Belikins each ($3) to go in the boat's ice box for lunch. Water freely available.
- Do be comfortable to go even if you have not much snorkeling experience. As long as you can swim! TIP: After lunch the boat anchors in 2-3 meters of water where you dive in to see the turtles and rays feeding on the bottom.
- Do take high factor suncream - trips are cancelled due to customer sunburn from previous day. TIP: Take a wetsuit if you have one - it means you can stay out longer :)
- Do check the wave heights (ideally less than 3 feet) and wind speed (ideally less than 15 knots) before you go. We went on 29th January in a good weather spell with massive 'night rains' beforehand. TIP: Search for 'ambergris caye belize weather forecast' for the next days forecast
- Don't book too far in advance, wait until the weather is good. It makes all the difference. TIP: Don't worry about heavy overnight rain in Placencia. It usually clears by 8am to be a great day out there.
- Don't leave it too late in your holiday as Silk Caye trips can be cancelled same morning if weather worsens or people drop out so the numbers are less than 4. TIP: Consider a BTL sim card (office on the village) so you have a local number. Only 22 BZD including $10 credit - no brainer!
Do have an amazing day - unforgettable!

Wayne Castellanos, professional fisherman and freestyle deep sea diver, was recommended to us by the owner of the house we rented. My husband, daughter, and I did not want to go with a group, and we could not have had a better guide or trip. Wayne is a real pro and watched over us constantly, and his prices are reasonable. He made sure to get us to Silk Caye early to avoid the crowds, and snorkeled with us around the caye. It's about 1 1/2 hours on his boat from Placencia to the caye. Instead of a horrible lunch that we saw other people eating with their guides, Wayne took us to Hatchet Caye, about 2 miles from Silk Caye for lunch. It's a beautiful resort and the food was fabulous and reasonable, and no one else was there. Then he took us to deeper water to snorkel with barracuda, giant turtles, sharks, and sting rays. It was a magical day. His number is: 661-1151. Highly recommend.

What would be the best time and day of the week to try and avoids the crowds, we will be visiting in May?

I agree with the other responses. Get a private guide and leave early if you get there early enough you will probably be finishing up before the masses arrive.

Hi Michelle,
What was the name of the tour guide business you used? Thanks in advance!! :)

Hi LizB3233,
We booked a tour through Hatchet Caye Resort - I believe they have their own tour boat. We booked the Turtle spot/Silk Caye Tour - well worth doing 2 spots over just the one. Our guides were Rasta and Elroy - they were amazing, friendly, and took their time to show us a lot of sea life!! It was a blast!! Hope this helps :)
Best,
Michelle
