How many places in the world can boast of a massive, gorgeous tree which owns the ground underneath its roots?

My daughter, a graduate of University of Georgia back in 2008 happened to drive through Athens with us and mentioned it. So we stopped to see it. It's a tree. No big deal. Just a tree.

It's basically a tree. Drive by to say you've seen it and that's all there is. But hey you're in Athens, there's not too much to see anyway.

This is unique to Athens and fun to visit, up a cobblestone street. I've always been fascinated by its story. ""The Tree that Owns Itself," which is located at the top of the steep hill where Dearing and Finley Streets intersect, is probably the most...More

Its a nice tree, but not much else to see. Worth a drive-by. No parking so you have to make it a quick visit otherwise youre blocking traffic

Not worth a day trip, lol. But if you're in the neighborhood its worth a drive by. Its in a neighborhood so be mindful of parking.

I love this tree- it’s a quick 2-minute stop to see it. This is actually the son of the original tree that was planted from an acorn or the original tree when it got knocked down in the 40s. Cool local history.

Friends had told me about the tree with its history. It's a short drive from the university grounds and is located in a quiet neighborhood, sort of the kind you stop to think that maybe you'd like to live there as well. The tree is...More

If you are within walking distance and it’s on your way then it’s ok. Otherwise, it’s just a regular tree and I wouldn’t make a special trip or go far out of the way. We were walking around campus and meandered to see it. I...More

The truth: it is just a medium sized tree growing in one lane of a road. It is circled by a stone wall. And all moss covered. The story of the tree is much more interesting than seeing the tree itself. You are close to...More

Traffic is nothing like Atlanta. The only busy times are 8am-9am and 4:30-6pm M-F. During summer the campus is quiet, so downtown traffic is light.
